AJAX, ON - Joey McColm anticipates a top-10 finish on a NASCAR Canadian Tire Series road course. He would love for it to happen on the streets of Toronto next Saturday in the Jumpstart 100.
The Ajax, Ontario, racer drives the Ultimate Drivers-sponsored Dodge in Canada's premier stock car series, and the only thing preventing a good finish in 2010 has been lady luck.
“I think we can expect a top-10 in Toronto if things go our way,” says McColm. “Our road course program continues to improve, and I'm confident we can finish towards the front if we have a clean run.”
McColm is known more as an oval track racer, but the young civil engineering student believes his road course skills are improving.
“We've put alot of effort into our road course program,” says McColm. “TSN just announced that Toronto's race will be broadcast live, and I'm thrilled to represent Ultimate Drivers, Espar Heaters and Atto Insurance on live television.
“I can't say enough about the support John Atto has given our team.”
One of the highest profile races of the year - the Toronto Indy brings with it various marketing opportunities. McColm recently drove his two-seater race car at Sunset Speedway north of Toronto giving numerous media personalities a high-speed thrill.
The downtown festivities also put McColm as close to his peers as he's going to get. While his driver profile lists Ajax as his hometown, Mccolm resides in downtown Toronto while attending Ryerson University. He could walk to Tuesday's autograph session at Yonge-Dundas Square which is scheduled for 5 p.m.
The PR blitz comes after a peculiar on-track success in Quebec last weekend. Normally a 14th place finish is no reason to celebrate, but McColm was more than pleased.
“We had no intentions of racing at St. Eustache,” says Mccolm. “We wound up taking part in a Canada Day event in Ottawa just before the race for our sponsor WATCH IT!, so we decided to travel the short distance and compete. We had two goals in St. Eustache. We wanted to finish the race in one piece, and we wanted to raise awareness and funds for Connekt.ca.”
Mccolm stayed out of trouble on the tricky flat track, and the team raised $400 for Rick Parks and Connekt.ca.
“We'll take momentum anywhere we can find it,” says McColm. “The season didn't start the way we hoped, but I think we're in the process of turning our luck around.”

Ajax racer anticipates good run in NASCAR's debut in Toronto

Beaver Dam, WI- July 10, 2010- Joey Saldana has said a number of times this season that you need a little luck on your side when racing with the World of Outlaws, and he has had a couple of potential wins slip through his fingers by circumstances out of his control and by having some bad luck. He certainly had good luck on his side on Saturday night as he was victorious at Beaver Dam Raceway in Wisconsin in the Jim Boyd “JB” Memorial, despite having a rapidly deflating right rear tire during the waning laps at the high-banked 1/3-mile bullring.
Saldana had his Kasey Kahne Racing teammate Paul McMahan battle with him down the stretch, including on a couple of double file restarts. He held off McMahan to earn his series leading eighth A-Feature win of the season. The $10,000 victory for the second generation driver was the 67th of his World of Outlaws career which ties him with Stevie Smith for eighth on the all-time win list.
“We've given a few races away this year and in a situation like that, it's out of your control and I thought we were going to give another one away tonight,” said Saldana in Victory Lane, when asked about his right rear tire. “We were able to hang in there and win the race. The crew definitely deserves to win with how hard they work day in and day out.”
Saldana was out front on six double file restarting, choosing the low line twice and the high line four times, including on the final double file restart with three laps to go. Following that restart, the red flag waved for a three-car incident involving Jason Meyers, Jac Haudenschild and Tim Kaeding before a lap had been completed, leading to a single file restart by way of rules.
“I was running better on the top and wanted to make that work up there,” explained the winner. “My car was good and it was a demanding race. Lapped traffic was pretty tough. You didn't know where they were going to go. You just had to try and not make too many mistakes and luckily tonight we didn't make too many.”
Saldana used the win to extend his lead in the World of Outlaws championship standings to 32 markers over 20-time series champion Steve Kinser as he chases his first title. In addition to leading the series in wins with eight, Saldana tops the leader board in Top-Five finishes with 23 aboard the Budweiser Maxim.
“We're just doing the best we can do and I think we are better than what we are showing,” stated the native of Brownsburg, Indiana. “We've had a lot of situations that have been out of our control that have knocked us out of races. It was good to tonight. You have to have luck with these guys and tonight we had it.”
McMahan started fourth and got around Jason Meyers on the fifth lap for third and then worked his way by Lucas Wolfe on the 10th lap to set his sights on his teammate. McMahan was able to track Saldana down in traffic a couple of times, but was not quite able to make a pass. He fell back to third just past the halfway point of the 40-lap contest and again battled Wolfe for the runner-up spot before retaking it with 11 laps to go. The veteran would end up in the runner-up spot in the Great Clips Maxim.
“Joey (Saldana) had a tire going down and that was my only shot at getting by him since we weren't going to get back into lapped traffic,” McMahan shared. “It was another good night for the Kasey Kahne Racing coming home first and second. My crew worked hard as always and it's great to get good finishes for all of the people involved in this and who believe in me.”
Steve Kinser lined up seventh and steadily worked his way to the front to come home third aboard the Bass Pro Shops Maxim to earn his series leading 32 nd Top-10 finish of the season. He used a couple of strong double file restarts to pick up three spots over the final 10 laps of the race.
“It wasn't too bad,” said Kinser of his run. “It's hard to run third to those (two) cars the last couple of nights. We got going pretty good at the end of the race, was just a little bit tight. I felt good those last couple of laps, we just came up a little short.”
McMahan was able to keep pace with Saldana on the restarts and also gained a lot of ground on him in lapped traffic. The runner-up finish for McMahan helped mark the second consecutive one/two finish for Kasey Kahne Racing.
“The car was better around the top,” noted McMahan. “The restarts were pretty tough on the bottom. We were fortunate on that last double file restart to get up on top and try to chase Joey (Saldana) down. It just wasn't meant to be. If we keep clicking off these finishes, we'll get our wins.”
Lucas Wolfe continued his strong season coming home fourth in the Allebach Racing Maxim, after starting the night by setting fast time in qualifying. He started third and moved into second in the early going and then just past the halfway point retook that spot and was right on Joey Saldana in traffic. For Wolfe it was his 12th Top-Five finish of the season as he continues to close in on his first World of Outlaws win.
Craig Dollansky came home fifth in the Big Game Treestands Maxim, with Donny Schatz sixth aboard the Armor All/STP J&J. Kerry Madsen was seventh in the Halls Haulage KPC. Brian Ellenberger finished in the Top-10 for the second straight year at Beaver Dam Raceway coming home eighth in the Ti-22 Performance JEI. The reigning Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year came all the way from the 24th starting to earn the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award.
Sammy Swindell was ninth aboard the Big Game Treestands Maxim, with Kraig Kinser rounding out the Top-10 in the Quaker State Maxim.
The World of Outlaws return to action on Sunday, July 11 at Cedar Lake Speedway.

BOWMANVILLE, Ont. (July 11) - Jordan Szoke edged closer to an unprecedented seventh Canadian Superbike title and a perfect season with a victory in Sunday's fifth round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship at Mosport International Raceway.
In his most convincing performance of the year, the Brantford, Ont. racer led all the way from pole position on his Waznie Racing / BMC Ciclo Werks / DeWildt Honda CBR1000RR and crossed the line 6.357 secs. ahead of Francis Martin on the radX HD / BMW Motorrad Canada BMW S1000RR.
Frank Trombino completed the podium riding the ProStar Motorsports / Sturgess Cycle Honda CBR1000RR.
Szoke completed the 20 laps around the 3.957 km (2.459-mile) Mosport circuit in 27 minutes, 18.682 seconds for an average speed of 173.862 km/h (108.043 mph).
“I think I got one of the best starts of my career,” said Szoke after his all-time leading 34th career national Superbike win and his ninth at Mosport International Raceway. “That's what I wanted. I knew there would be some strong racing behind me and that allowed me to open a gap early.”
Szoke turned the fastest lap of the race, a 1:21.084 on lap three and was five seconds clear of Martin before the race was five laps old. He held that margin the rest of the way to pick up his fifth Parts Canada Superbike win in a row, tying a series record.
The triumph completed a sweep of Superbike wins for Szoke at Mosport after he also captured the victory on Saturday despite battling a leaking radiator.
“We made some big suspension changes for today and we nailed the set up,” he said. “I just tried to maintain my pace and played it cautious with traffic. I could have gone into the [one minute] 20s if I had to.”
Szoke heads into the season ending doubleheader at Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, N.S. with a 74-point lead over Martin, 268-194. A win is worth 50 points.
“I've won five in a row three times now in my career and I want to win those last two,” said Szoke, who also picked up five victories in 2002 and 2006. “I'm going to do my best to do that. I want a perfect season and put my name up there.”
Martin was third off the start and spent two laps trying to get around the Competition Systems Kawasaki Race Team Kawasaki ZX-10R of Alex Welsh. He picked up his second straight runner-up finish of the weekend and his third in a row.
“I tried very hard to pass Alex and we had a big fight, we passéd back and forth two or three times I think,” said the two-time Canadian Superbike champion from Sherbrooke, Que. “I tried very hard to catch Jordan but I couldn't quite do it.”
Trombino got caught up in a battle for third with the BMW S1000RRs of Mike Ferreira and Andrew Nelson. The Kleinburg, ON racer got the spot for good on lap 11 and pulled clear for his best finish of the season.
Trombino had crossed the line second on Saturday after a spirited race but was disqualified when his bike was unable to complete post race technical inspection. Third place on Sunday represented his best Superbike finish of the year.
“I definitely had to work for it,” said Trombino, a two-time Superbike race winner at Mosport. “Once I finally got away from those guys I just put my head down and tried to catch Francis, but he was too far away.”
Ferreira crossed the line fourth on the second of the radX HD / BMW Motorrad Canada entries but the Mississauga, Ont. rider was penalized five seconds for a jump start and dropped to fifth in the results.
That moved Nelson up to fourth on the Orion Motorsports / BMW Motorrad Canada S1000RR, and the Kars, Ont. rider maintains third place in the Parts Canada Superbike standings with 157.
After a great start got him into second off the line Uxbridge, Ont.'s Welsh slipped back to sixth in the final results and Jodi Christie of Keene, Ont. placed seventh on the Jodi Christie Racing / Durham Honda Powerhouse Honda CBR600RR.
In other action at Mosport, Szoke also won his fifth straight Pro Sport Bike race of the season on his Honda CBR600RR after a spectacular battle with the similar bike of Christie. The two swapped the lead repeatedly until the final lap, when they made contact two turns from the finish and Christie crashed. He managed to remount to cross the line fourth, which became third due to a jump start penalty to Trombino.

Immediately following last week's disappointing 8th place finish at the Grisdale Triple Crown
event at Flamboro Speedway,

the Shaw crew went to work to replace the failing motor with the new 604 crate. The brake fluid that failed at the high temperatures, was also replaced with a much higher boiling point fluid in preparation for a day of testing and motor break in on Tuesday's practice day. The motor was working flawlessly after the break in period and the brake issue was resolved early in the day so the crew went to work on the chassis setup to rid the car of the push condition that hindered the team in previous weeks. Dave Meades monitored the changes and after successfully eliminating the push, the team scuffed in two sets of tires for upcoming races.
Sunshine and warm temperatures greeted the team as they arrived at the track for the double points night and both crew and driver were confident that they brought their “A” game to the speedway. For the first practice, the car was just a little loose off so the crew made a very minor change in the right rear shock in an attempt to tighten it up. Jason was pretty happy with the way the car was handling and the lap times indicated that the car was fast. The second practice was a little better than the first and the crew decided to make no more changes and see how the car would handle in the traffic of the first heat race.
Jason lined up the Roof Trusses and Components Ford in the 4th starting position behind the #29, #8 and #77 for the first of two heat races and after a false start for the #29 jumping the green flag, Jason was able to clear the #77 on the restart before they exited turn two. The #29 and #8 battled side by side for the first two laps with Jason patiently waiting behind to follow the faster car. As the #29 pulled into the lead, Jason made a move inside the #8 for second followed by a run on the inside of the #29 for the lead on lap four. The #8 also got by the #29 who fell back to fourth, however Jason had pulled well ahead for the remaining laps and the checkered flag.
The #82 Fleet Image Fusion lined up in 3rd for the second heat behind the #05 and #00 and was cleared by his
spotter past the #00 partway through the first lap into 2nd behind the #05. On the second lap, Jason got a run on the inside of the #05 and took over the lead with the #8 following him, taking over second. By the half way mark, the #82 pulled well ahead and would finish 10 car lengths ahead of the #8 for the second checkered flag of the night.
It was a rare night for the crew as they had no work to do on the car to ready for the feature other than add fuel
as the driver was very happy with the handling of the car. Despite Jason thinking that the motor was not pulling as good as it could until it got seated in with more laps to produce more power, the car was getting through the corners better than it had all year thanks to the Tuesday practice session and changes made by Dave Meades. Jason lined up to start 7th in the 30 lap feature where he would be behind the #8 and beside the #36. The caution came out as they completed the first lap for the #77 who spun on his own and it would be the #05 who led the
field to the restart as he got by the #50 on the first lap. Jason got by the #36 and into 6th and as the #05 pulled away at the front, Jason got by the #29 into 5th and then the #50 into 4th as they completed lap five. The #8 opened the door inside the #3 to move into second and Jason was on his tail to follow through the door into 3rd on lap 8. The #05 had pulled ahead by 10 car lengths, however as he caught lapped traffic at the half way mark, the #8 and #82 caught up to him. On lap 17, Jason would try a run on the outside of the #8 , however he could not make it work and settled back in behind. The #8 got on the inside of the #05 with 10 laps remaining, taking over the lead and Jason followed close behind to take over second. As Jason was fighting hard with the #8 at the front, the caution came out for the #17 who

broke in turn three leaving debris and fluid on the track. Jason restarted on the outside of the #8 where he drove for three laps before falling in behind back into second with the #36 now digging on the inside trying to steal the position. Despite burning up the right rear by running so hard on the outside, Jason bounced off the backstretch wall exiting turn two but gained the position back, putting the #36 behind him. The bounce off the wall loosened up the car and it was all that the driver could do to hold off the #36 and finish 2nd, 4 car lengths behind the #8.
Next up for the Shaw Team is a return visit to Flamboro Speedway on Saturday July 17th for a regular night of
racing. Pit gates open at 4:00pm, followed by the main gates at 5:00 and racing is scheduled to begin at 6:30pm.
