TWO WINS IN ONE
EDMONTON, AB. - Spruce Grove, Alberta's Bruce Broughton extended his championship points lead in the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series with a weekend sweep of Feature events at Castrol Raceway. Both victories took place on the same day. A major thunderstorm delayed the start of Fridays Gold Cup event by almost three hours. The NPP Feature did not begin until12:30AM Saturday morning. Broughton would again visit the winners circle in Edmonton just 18 hours later.

“Proud to be the point leader in the Series that's for sure,” smiles the driver of the #61 MDM Foundations Chevrolet, “to win both Gold Cup features was a bonus because everyone steps it up at the bigger events.” All NPP Series race teams had to contend with a wild swing in track conditions. “It was north and south tracks both races,” exclaims Broughton, “the rain gave us a sticky heavy track the first night and for some reason the track went extremely dry on night number two. It was a dry as they come that's for sure.” Broughton credits his crew for getting him to the winners circle both nights. “I have a great bunch of guys behind me. The car hooked up both races and the changes and adjustments they made to the race car got me here.” It's the third Feature win in a row for Broughton, a feat which was last accomplished by NPP Series competitor Dwight Kennedy back in 2007. “Three in a row is something special. I've never done it in a NPP Late Model before. For my team we are very proud of this accomplishment.”
NPP RACE NOTES:
- Leduc Alberta's Trevor Emond won all four heat races driving the #5 Dodge for Kevin Clark who was at a wedding.

- the pole sitter has not won a Feature race in 2010. Only 7 Features have been won from the pole position the last 30 NPP Series events.
- Northern Provincial Pipelines sponsors Jason Solwolds Sprint Car. The Burlington, Washington driver won the 2010 Gold Cup on Saturday night. By: GORD CRAIG - cellphone: (780) 886 - 5232

BROUGHTON WINS …. THEN WINS AGAIN

“We've had a tough time on the series so far this year,” remarked Hearn, who posted his first top-five of the year on tour just last Sunday at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park. “So to come here and back up the 2nd-place finish at Rolling Wheels with a win is pretty good.”
“You could tell we had a good car tonight. I could do what I wanted to do and make the passes when I needed to make them. To go by Billy Decker who was leading the race for so long was a pretty tough deal,” said Hearn, buckled into last season's proven Madsen Motorsports no. 20 Wentworth Custom Homes-Benjamin Moore Paints/TEO
After leading from the opening green flag, runner-up Decker from Unadilla, N.Y. stretched out his Super DIRTcar Series points lead, while new track record-holder Steve Paine from Waterloo, N.Y. ended up third ahead of Rochester, New Yorker Danny Johnson and hard-charger Jimmy Phelps from Baldwinsville, N.Y. Central New York standout Ryan Phelps, Frenchman Kayle Robidoux, touring stars Dale Planck and Matt Sheppard, and Planck's teammate Carey Terrance filled out the Top-10 in the headline 'Go Glass International 100' that needed just 38 minutes to complete.
Paine joined Decker and Johnson among the last arrivals at Cornwall on Sunday, yet his Swarthout Recycling no. 7x Tallmadge Tire-Terrell's Potato Chips/Bicknell entry was dialed in right from the start. Despite no practice, the 'Hurricane' circled the track in a time of 12.875 sec. (69.903 mph), establishing a new Big-Block standard after surpassing the old mark of 12.882 sec. set in 2006 by fellow Waterloo driver Sheppard.
Paine also copped his qualifying heat and appeared to have the car to beat until selecting 11th in the customary pre-race draw among the Top-12 preliminary race qualifiers. Yet after timing sixth quickest in Bilstein Shocks trials and crossing the line third in his own heat, Decker snatched up the pole to lead the 30-car field to the starting grid and begin the 100-lap finale.
As expected, Decker blasted out front early with Robidoux and Planck in tow, opening up a 10-car length advantage before Michael Storms suffered engine trouble in the Four Star/TEO mount to force out the first yellow flag on lap eight. Small-block pavement specialist Martin Roy was the next victim of mechanical failure, forcing the Napierville, Que. pilot to pull to the front stretch infield and incur a second caution period on lap 13.
Decker remained unchallenged up front ahead of Small-Blockers Robidoux and Ladouceur while third-place starter Danny Johnson fell into fourth followed by Pierre Dagenais as heavy traffic patterns developed during the initial 30 laps. When Billy Dunn stopped high in turn two to bring out the third yellow eight laps later, seventh-place started Hearn had cracked the front-five for the first time.
At the midway point, fourth-place Hearn had tracked down Robidoux and Ladouceur while Decker was a straightaway out front in the LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium Int'l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell ride. Paine had crept up to six followed by Johnson, Sheppard, Planck, Pat O'Brien and Tom Sears Jr.
Lap after lap Hearn proceeded to get quicker as the field seemed to slow on the slickening surface. He grabbed third from Ladouceur on lap 55 and swept high around Robidoux for second on lap 62, then stalked Decker for a handful of laps before making the winning pass low out of turn four on lap 67.
A pair of cautions for Mario Clair (lap 77) and Dunn (lap 81) were all that could hold Hearn back as Decker fought off Paine for the runner-up position. Paine finally wrestled second-place from Decker on lap 70 before hopping the cushion on lap 85 and dropping back to third.
With 10 to go 22nd-place starter Jimmy Phelps had reeled in the leaders, taking over sixth with five to go and looking for more. Johnson ducked under Robidoux for fourth on lap 93 and Phelps grabbed fifth two laps later. With just one to go Phelps nosed past Johnson, yet coming around for the final checkered Danny edged Phelps by a few feet, far behind Hearn who built a straightway advantage at the stripe.
“When the track changes as much as it did during the course of the feature, you never know what to expect,” admitted Hearn, who followed up his Small-Block win at Cornwall on May 23 with victory in the 100-lap Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship Series opener at Merrittville (Ont.) Speedway the following day. “It started out pretty tacky and instantly went black with only a couple spots of brown.”
“You just didn't know what's going to happen so you just keep working at it and working at it. When I needed to get a good pass at the bottom of (turns) three and four late in the race I could do it. And that was something I couldn't do at the beginning of the race,” Hearn added.
Securing an eighth straight top-five tally in as many Series shows this season, opening round Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway winner Decker settled for second-place for the fourth time in 2010.
“The car was real close, just hate to waste a front row starting spot like that,” said the disappointed driver after leading the first two-thirds of the race only to fall short in his own bid for a fourth tour triumph at Cornwall. “So far we've been fortunate to get some real good starts in the Super DIRTcar Series.
“We were really good, probably obviously too good early to be that good later on. The track slowed, it gave up a half-second, we gave up around 7/10-sec. and just got poorer and poorer after that. Brett was driving away looking pretty good. If we had a late-race caution not sure if we had anything for him but I would've been up there on the wheel trying to figure something out. Everybody's working real hard, we're gonna get 'em pretty soon,” declared Decker, 45, who stands third all-time with 54 Series wins, including four at the Syracuse Mile on the New York state Fairgrounds.
Posting his second tour top-five finish in the past three races, Paine was content with the show position despite climbing as high as second with 20 laps to go.
“Its our best finish of the Series so far, we're just going a little bit at a time,” said Paine, 49, after matching his best tour finish at Cornwall that was logged in 2007. “Had a good qualifying run and a good heat but drew a bad a number to start and still came back to almost finish second. Almost pushed off at the end there and went last.”
“I got up next to Brett on that last restart and that's about as close as I could get. Always thought I could get second tonight, just got really bad in the holes. I tried two or three different lines and everyone got worse. Just happy with third right now. We've got until Thursday (All-Star Weeknd) to get things together,” added Paine.
Teams return to Central New York for the highly anticipated return of DIRTcar All-Star Weekend, leading off with Brewerton Speedway on July 15 before concluding at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on July 16-17 in the summer's richest short-track racing event in the country for Big-Block Modifieds.

Cornwall, ONT - July 11, 2010 - One sure way for Brett Hearn to break out of a slump is to send the Super DIRTcar Series record-holder to Canada. In his second appearance of the season at Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday, the all-time Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels champion rode away with a commanding victory, this time worth $6,000 as the Sussex, N.J. speedster elevated his career mark to 104 wins on DIRTcar Northeast's premier Big-Block Modified tour.
Hearn has also now captured twice as many Super DIRTcar Series victories north of the border than any other driver, improving his Big-Block total to 18 in Canada with win number four registered at Ron Morin's fast quarter-miler in Cornwall, Ontario.

A busy weekend of four consecutive race nights was scheduled this past weekend, with weekly events at Chapman's Can Am Motorsports Park, Brockville Ontario Speedway and Cornwall Motor Speedway, followed by a special Monday night race back at Can Am, for the first ever appearance of the O'Reilly All Star Sprint Cars, as well as SUNY Canton Series racing for the Modifieds and Sportsman, and an invitational race for the Crate Late Models.
Mother Nature took care of my Friday night plans. Rain held off most of the day at Chapman's Can Am Motorsports Park, but shortly after 5PM, the track had to call the night's events due to rain.
Saturday was a much better day, and after I finished up my work commitments, I traveled to the Brockville Ontario Speedway for their Mid Summer Meltdown, consisting of double points for all classes.
The Modified feature was the most exciting of the evening, as Stephane Lafrance and Matt Billings battled for the lead during the last five laps, weaving their way in and out of lapped traffic, fighting for the number one spot. Billings briefly took the lead with three laps remaining, using the lapped cars to his advantage, and then less then a lap later Lafrance took the top spot in similar fashion. Lafrance crossed the finish line ahead of Billings, while Danny O'Brien, Jason Riddell and Pat O'Brien completed the top five.
In the Sportsman division, it was a first time winner, with Kingston, Ontario racer Mike Mainse taking the checkered flag. Sheldon Hoogwerf finished second, Dave Wilgosh was third, Dylan Evoy fourth and Chris Herbison in a borrowed car finished in the fifth position. Lansdowne racer Steve Barber won his qualifying heat, and started on the pole for the feature. Mechanical problems sidelined Barber near the half way point, taking away any chance of his first ever win. Mallorytown's Josh Kane was caught up in a lap one crash, and was unable to continue.
The Street Stock feature winner was Alex Gagnon, with Nicholas Gauvreau and Kevin Fetterly Jr, rounding out the podium. Jean Marc Larose continued his domination of the 4cylinder “Rookie” division with his sixth win of the season. Brandon Henderson and Joe McNichols completed the top three.
The Cornwall Motor Speedway hosted the Big Block Modifieds Super DIRTcar Series on Sunday night, and it was Brett “The Jet” Hearn taking home the popular victory. Hearn passed Billy Decker for the lead on lap 66 and never looked back. Decker held on to second place and Steve Paine finished third. Danny Johnson and Jimmy Phelps finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Ghislain Valade won the Pro Stock feature at Cornwall, Gaetan Amesse was the Semi Pro feature winner and Corey Barnes was the Mini Stock winner.
Just one more race remains on my racing schedule, the Monday night SUNY Canton Summer Sizzler featuring the 410 Sprints, SUNY Canton Modifieds and Sportsman and Crate Late Models. Due to press time requirements, you can read all about it at my website listed below. Finish Line Web Design also features many different driver and track websites, as well as www.speedwaynostalgia.com , dedicated to the history of our great sport in the Kingston, Brockville, Can Am, Cornwall areas and beyond. If you are looking for a website for your race team or business, send me an email.
After a couple days away from the track, I will be back at it this coming weekend, beginning Thursday night at Brewerton for another Modified Super DIRTcar Series race at the Brewerton Speedway. On Friday night, I will be at the Mohawk Raceway, in Hogansburg, New York for a rare appearance, as there is no racing on the big track at Chapman's Can Am Motorsports Park this weekend. The track will be open for a special Go Kart and ATV Racing event. On Saturday night I will be at Brockville for a full show, as well as the Patriot Sprint Cars. The Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday night will also host the same traveling Sprint Car Series and a regular show of Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks and Mini Stocks.
I hope you have enjoyed my weekly column. Any comments or suggestions can be sent to

NAPLES ME (7/12) All three Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North touring divisions will be in action Tuesday night July 13th at Red and Judy MacDonald's' immaculate Lee (NH) USA Speedway and the competition is guaranteed to be fast paced and action packed.
The PASS Sportsman have been added to this year's Lee USA stop, and that division will put on a 75 lap show that is sure to be a crowd pleaser. The touring Sportsman will have just a few hours to get dialed in for their feature, and although many of the series regulars have made the trip to Lee in the fall for Lee's popular Octoberfest event, they haven't experienced the fast three-eighths in the heat of midsummer. Expect the Friday night regulars at the Route 125 oval to give the touring pros fits, although the extra distance will help to even up the score. 2009 series champ Carey Martin and Clyde Hennessey are knotted atop the PASS Sportsman point standings after two events; Mike Landry trails the pair by five.
The PASS Mod boys have a 40 lap sprint on the schedule, and point leader Andy Shaw has to be looking forward to the series' return to Lee. Shaw won two of the three PASS Mod shows at Lee in 2009 . Wayne Whitten Jr. has a Lee Mod win to his credit, and he'll be looking for another Tuesday. Bill Dixon, Scott McDaniel Sumner Sessions and Jon Brill are all chasing Shaw for the point lead in the economical open wheel touring series.
There are 200 green flag laps in store for the PASS super late model teams. That means strategy will be in the mix Tuesday night as a two tire change is an option for the

Runner up Louie Mechalides challenged Clark throughout the night and Cassius Clark was strong in third. There's a long list of early entries and you can expect a number of weekly super late model teams to take advantage of an off night at their home tracks to come race with PASS.
The NELCAR Legends complete the line-up for a night of racing that will deliver the kind of excitement that Lee USA Speedway is so famous for. Practice is slated for 4:00 PM, heat racing goes green at 6:00 PM and the first of four features rolls off at 7:00 PM. Expect the night's action to wrap up at approximately 10:15 PM.

(Peterborough, ON) - The Lucas Oil Sportsman Series finally kicked off their 2010 campaign on Saturday July 10th at Peterborough Speedway after the first race of the series was rained out a few weeks prior.
The night started with qualifying, and Jay Doerr and 'The Crowd Pleaser' Kelly Balson tied for the pole position with times of 14.99 seconds, while the top seven drivers were all within 11/1000ths of a second on the timing systems in the competitive session.
Doerr was able to take an early lead in the first of two 50-lapper while Balson was shuffled back in the pack. 2008 Series champion Shawn McGlynn was the first to apply pressure to Doerr before a caution slowed the field on lap seven.
The restart from that caution would prove to be the only one of the night, as Josh Wood passed McGlynn to take second position. As the green flag run wore on, Wood tried to get by Doerr numerous times, almost succeeding while working heavy lapped traffic late in the race, but having to settle for a second-place finish to Doerr at the end of the 50-lap affair. Balson clawed back to third, getting by McGlynn late in the event, shuffling McGlynn back to a fourth-place finish. Dave Connelly would round out the top-five.
Doerr spoke about his first career win in the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup, saying, “Our car was on rails in the first 50-lapper. It's been over three years since we won a feature so this has been a long time coming. We had some good runs to close the season last year when we first got the car, but couldn't finish the deal. We started to lose the brakes late in the race, and I had to back the corner up to make sure I wasn't going to get beat coming off, but Josh raced me really clean and we had a lot fun racing.”
The inversion was made at the start finish line as Doerr drew a five, which would put Connelly on the pole for the second half of the twin bill, and McGlynn beside him on the initial green flag.
Connelly grabbed the early lead with McGlynn in tow, but it was Wood that was on the charge again, moving to second shortly after a lap 19 restart. Wood looked like the biggest challenger until a flat tire forced him to pit road under green just after the halfway mark. Doerr was the next to challenge Connelly until a late race restart when McGlynn moved to second-place past Doerr, but Shawn was unable to do anything with Connelly as Dave picked up his first career Lucas Oil Sportsman Series victory, with McGlynn second, and Doerr rounding out the podium.
Balson finished fourth, with Jason Meyer rounding out the top-five.

Doerr and Connelly - Duo of First Time LOSC Winners in Peterborough

Connelly spoke about his first career feature win, “It's starting the sink in now, and about the only regret I have is that some of the guys that have been with me for years aren't here tonight. Our car was pretty good all night, but it started to go away late in the race, and I had to slow down and make sure I was able to get off the turns and am a little surprised that we didn't get wrecked. I tried to guard the bottom, and was going to make them go around the outside to beat me.”
Doerr leaves Peterborough as the point leader, and is thrilled to be in that position, “It's been a long time since we've led any point standings, but we'll take it and get ready for Sunset Speedway next weekend.”
1st feature - 1. Doerr, 2. Wood, 3. Balson, 4. McGlynn, 5. Connelly.
2nd feature - 1. Connelly, 2. McGlynn, 3. Doerr, 4. Balson, 5. Meyer.
Unofficial Points Standings after 1 of 7 events - 1. Doerr - 103 points, 2. Balson - 98, 3. Connelly - 97, 4. McGlynn - 96, 5. Meyer - 84.
The next event for the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup will be Sunday, July 18th at the newly renovated Sunset Speedway, just South of Barrie. Spectator gates open at 2:00, and racing starts at 3:30.

It was bound to happen. After 3 solid weeks of action to kick-off the 2010 campaign, Kawartha Speedway was bound to experience the wrath of Mother Nature. It's just unfortunate that the first rainout of the 10th Anniversary Season had to come on one of the biggest nights of the year. After suffering through hot, humid and sticky conditions to start the week, the forecast changed to showers with the possibility of heavy rain and thunderstorms. General Manager and Promoter Derek Lynch says there was no other choice but to pull the plug.
“The Summer Sizzler is one of our marquee events and we hated to have to postpone things,” said Lynch. “With an increased car count expected to chase the $3,000.00 winner's purse and a capacity crowd to watch the action, we wanted to make sure everything would go off well for all concerned.”
When Lynch and track officials first announced that the event had been postponed, they issued a release with a new date of September 3rd. After checking events at other tracks, it was learned that the make-up date was also the kick-off of Delaware Speedway's Great Canadian Race Weekend.
“We moved a little quickly announcing the new date,” admits Lynch. “In the spirit of co-operation between Kawartha and other tracks, we decided it was best to stay away from another speedway's big events, so we're looking at a new date that we hope to be able to announce shortly.”
Fans can keep an eye on www.kawarthaspeedway.com where the make-up date for the 7th Annual Summer Sizzler will be announced soon. Next on the schedule is the 2010 edition of the Fan Appreciation Night, presented by Earl Ireland Auto Sales Friday, July 16th. A 50 lap Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stock will be the highlight of the night, along with an on-track autograph session. All admission prices will be reduced by 50% for the night. The show will also include the 3rd Annual Holiday Ford Race for Charity.

Dale Glassford has had a clear view of every feature race winner in the Dover Sanitation UMP Late Model class this season at South Buxton Raceway.

Saturday night marked the second time that the Ridgetown driver saw the checkered flag fall in front of his windshield.
The other five times, he watched the checkered wave for the driver directly in front of him.
“I kept thinking, 'we're not going to keep finishing second forever,' and if we're not going to be second, we'd better finish first,” said Glassford, with a laugh, after ending his streak of five straight second-place feature finishes.
He won the opening night feature before his string of five-straight runner-up runs.
“I've never seen a car finish second so many times, I can't believe it,” said Glassford, who also had five second-place finishes in 2008 without winning a single feature.
“On any night, there's five or six cars that if they start in the front row or get away after five laps, they're gonna win,” Glassford said.
Glassford took the lead on lap four after trading paint with Chatham's Brad Authier, a three-lap battle which had the fans on their feet as neither driver was giving an inch.
“Track position is everything, when someone gets out front in this class, it's hard to catch them,” he said. “Tonight, we were able to get out front and they had to catch us.”
Glassford enjoyed his early battle with Authier.
“You know Brad is going to race you hard and do everything he can to win,” Glassford said. “When I got up beside him, I thought I'd better get by him now or I'd never get the chance again.”
Authier brought out the caution on lap seven with a flat tire but managed to get back on the track at the tail end of the lead lap. He stayed in front of Glassford until a caution enabled the six-time champion to get the drive-around. He wound up with an impressive fourth-place finish.
Chatham's Kirk Hooker moved into second with six laps to go but was unsuccessful on two attempts to slingshot past Glassford between turns one and two.
Hooker finished second followed by Chatham's Jim Jones, Authier and Lewis.
Authier won the heat and pursuit races earlier in the night, with Glassford second both times.
Glassford, the defending series champion, went into the night with a 67-point lead over Authier. He now has five checkered flags on the season with two features and three heat wins.
Glassford only had one feature win and one heat win en route to his 2009 points title.
Wyoming's Brian Speelman won his first career feature in the Schinkels Gourmet Meats UMP Modifieds while Merlin's Steve Shaw posted his 94th career feature win, and his second of the season in the Windride Transportation Services Sport Stocks.
Nate McNally, of Charing Cross, returned from a two-week suspension to win his third Four Seasons Driver Education Comp 4 feature of the season.
Speelman took the lead on the second lap and led the final 18 circuits to win his first career feature race as a Modified driver.
Speelman last won a feature race in 2004 while racing in South Buxton's former Econo Class.

“This is my sixth year in Modifieds and until this year, the only race I won was a non-points heat race,” Speelman said.
Saturday's feature was Speelman's fourth checkered flag of the season to go along with three heat race wins. He has had two top-five finishes in the previous six features, including a second to Merlin's Brad McLeod on June 19.
“I'd have to say just experience,” Speelman said about his turnaround this season.
“I'm getting more familiar with the car, learning the set up and the weekly upkeep.
“We're not breaking,” he added. “We had a good start to the season and we've just been building on it.”
Speelman started outside of the second row but quickly moved into second behind pole-sitter Jeff Simpson of Mt. Brydges.
After taking the lead, Speelman held off a challenge from Belle River's Mario Toniolo for the next 14 laps.
“I couldn't get the car to stick to the bottom tonight, but I didn't want to open the door for him. He (Toniolo) told me (after the race) that he tried a few times but couldn't get by me.”
Toniolo wobbled and lost two spots with four laps to go just before the lone caution of the race came out on lap 17, wiping out Speelman's good-sized lead.
One lap after the restart, Chatham's C.J. Field tried to make an inside move on Speelman for the lead but spun between turns one and two.
The race went green the rest of the way as Speelman easily rode to the checkered flag ahead of the runner-up McLeod. Toniolo recovered to finish third, with LaSalle's Mike Demars fourth and Shrewsbury's Jim Dale Jr. fifth.
Shaw won the drag race with fellow front-row starter Maidstone's Scott MacKenzie on the first lap and led all 20 laps for his second Windride Transportation Services Sport Stocks feature win of the season.
“I just wanted to concentrate on hitting my marks and get some momentum going - that lasted about two laps,” Shaw said about his early race strategy going out the window in another caution-plagued feature.
“The car was handling good and I hit my marks the first couple of laps, but after all of those cautions, the car wasn't handling as well. I was afraid to get off the bottom.”
MacKenzie saw his strong run go south with two laps to go as he had to go to the pits and finished 10th.
Chatham's Eric Vanderiviere finished second, followed by points leader Doris Lajeunesse of Essex, Merlin's Eren Vanderiviere and Essex's Gerald Martin to round out the top five.
The Sport Stocks feature was slowed by seven cautions.
McNally started at the back of the Four Seasons Driver Education Comp 4 feature, worked his way through the 17-car field and took the lead on lap five.
The feature was slowed by eight cautions in the first seven laps, including multi-yellows under caution and on restarts.
Three drivers surrendered the early lead with flat tires - Chatham's Randy McKinlay, Cottam's Rob Quick and Essex's Patrick Lajeunesse.
McNally inherited the lead after Lajeunesse's misfortune.
Quick recovered for a second-place finish while Blenheim's Shawn Jones finished third despite being penalized to the back of the field for causing an early race accident.
Lajeunesse rebounded to finish fourth while James Beaulieu of McGregor came home in fifth.
Denis DeSerrano of Cottam saw his chances for a third straight feature win go up in smoke when his engine expired early in the race.
The Mid-Season Championships will be held this Saturday, July 17.
