By Dave Medler, DIRTcar Racing Northeast Series Correspondent
Dave Marcuccilli took advantage of a front row starting position he earned with a victory during the Cayuga County Fair, grabbing the lead on the opening lap of the Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr DIRTcar Sportsman Series All-Star 30 and never looking back. For the Cayuga, N.Y. driver it was his first ever Series win and third in a row at the Weedsport oval.
“I just can't believe this, I don't know what to say,” beamed an excited Marcuccilli after exiting his no. m1 Barbay & Son Construction-Crew Boyz Racing-Stormin/Bicknell machine. “We haven't changed a thing in this car, all we've done is give it a wash and provide some basic maintenance.”
Marcuccilli out-dragged defending race winner Justin Wright and the rest of the 31-car starting field to lead the early laps. He built up a half straightaway lead until a seven-car tangle in turn four brought out the first caution period of the race.
With 10 laps showing on the scoreboard, Marcuccilli had built up a five car-length advantage over Wright who ran alone in second. Two-time reigning Mr. DIRTcar points king Chris Raabe, Cornwall Speedway series winner Tim Sears Jr. and current Cayuga Co. points leader Steve Gray were in a tight battle for top-five positions.
At the halfway mark Marcuccilli was still out running Wright, Sears, Raabe and Gray. Suddenly, going into turn one Raabe spun all by himself to bring out the yellow and he was able to continue at the tail end of the field.
On lap 22 Sears moved into second and took off after the leader, who had now built up a two-second lead over the field.
Former CCFS champion Jeremy Pitcher looped his Troyer entry in turn one on lap 27 to bring out the final caution flag and erase the seemingly insurmountable lead that Marcuccilli had built up.
Over the final laps Sears could pull even with Marcuccilli in turns three and four. Yet Marcuccilli never flinched as he held his line to be the first under the checkers by a car-length over the second-generation pilot from Clay, N.Y., finishing in front of Gray, Ryan Susice and Wright followed by Jipp Ortiz, Mark Chiddy, Matt Hulsizer, Jesse Cotriss and Eric Giguere among The Top-10.
"We started up front and that helped a lot. I just couldn't believe how good this car was even though we were still a little loose. You had to stay towards the bottom in one and two tonight, three and four I just kind of ran the middle and exited four off the bottom as it had good drive off,” added Marcuccilli, who remains just a one night a week racer.
The Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series has nearly two months off before getting back on track for rounds number four, five and six at Ransomville Speedway, Merrittville Speedway and Humberstone Speedway, Sept. 10-12.

Marcuccilli Is '10 Cayuga County Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series 'All-Star'
Weedsport, NY - July 17, 2010

as round number four of the Canadian NASCAR series marked several first. It was the first time Bourque and the series had been part of the Toronto Indy weekend. And it was also the first time a series race was broadcast live on television.
It was a frustrating start to the weekend as ignition problems limited the practice time for the #00 Aaron's Dream Machine Dodge team. The resulting qualifying effort of twenty sixth also fell well short of expectations. “It was tough to swallow” said Bourque “but I also knew we could learn quickly and also improve our position during the race” he added.
Bourque did exactly that with the #00 Aaron's Dream Machine Dodge. When the green flag waved he began his march forward. “Right away on the first lap I took the opportunity to pass a few back markers and didn't see them again” said Bourque.
From this point on Bourque looked to learn as much as possible and keep the #00 Aaron's Dream Machine Dodge forward. “There were some really good races all the way through the field today” remarked the driver. “When you're racing with others who haven't seen the track you are all racing at the same level” he explained. “So as the faster cars came around I studied their racing line and really improved a lot. If we were to race again tomorrow, which I'd love to do, we'd be that much better for it” he added.
There were other positives for the #00 Aaron's Dream Machine Dodge driver as well. “I really love the track, it's a great location and wonderful to be here with backing of Aaron's. And we did finish well enough to maintain our spot in the top-ten of the overall championship” he added.
Bourque also expects he'll be able to use much of what he learned this week at the next event in Edmonton. “Just watching these guys and some of the different lines they use you learn so much so quickly and I expect when we get to Edmonton the #00 Aaron's Dream Machine Dodge will be running much better right from the get go” he stated.

PIERRE BOURQUE GAINS EIGHT SPOTS IN AARON'S DREAM MACHINE IN TORONTO

by Tommy Goudge (July 16, 2010) - Steve Poirier visited a familiar spot on Friday night at Ohsweken Speedway - the Engine Pro Racing Winner's Circle. Poirier, twice a winner of Ohsweken's annual Canadian Sprint Car Nationals, led every lap of Friday night's Empire Super Sprints vs. Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprints "Battle on the Grand" twenty-five lap feature to claim his first feature win of the season. Meanwhile Jamie Cox, Steve Hess, Jesse McDonald, and Jason Powers claimed their first wins of the season in the ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini Stocks, Bombers, and Vintage Cars, respectively.
CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS VS. EMPIRE SUPER SPRINTS "BATTLE ON THE GRAND"
Jamie Turner and Steve Poirier started the feature on the front row, but it would take five tries to get the twenty-five lapper started. The trouble began on the original start when Kyle Moffit came to a stop in turn three with a steering problem.
The next try found pole-sitter Turner having a steering problem of his own as he turned sharp right in turn four and was lucky to avoid contact with the rest of the field. Turner restarted at the tail of the field while Mikey Kruchka inherited the top spot, but on the next start, Turner again had problems and spun to a stop in turn two. Turner then took the #11 to the pits for the rest of the night.
One more try at a start found Kevin Ward making contact with Wayne Ashton who in turn made contact the backstretch wall and bouncing back into the middle of the field, where Jim Huppunen and Glenn Styres got together and flipped wildly entering turn three. Both drivers emerged from their heavily damaged machines uninjured, but done for the night.
The race finally got started with Poirier taking the lead right away, while Kruchka fell to second. Kyle Moffit benefited from the caution flags by making repairs and rejoining the field at the rear without losing a lap. Moffit went to work immediately after starting at the back of the pack, and was already up to eighth when the caution came back. This time the reason was Jared Zimbardi, who lost his right rear wheel and stopped in turn four.
Zimbardi was done for the night, and when the race went back green again, another favourite suffered problems - The wing on defending track champion Tom Huppunen's ride came loose, forcing him to the infield.
Moffit had made his way to third by lap seven, and seemed to be on a mission. Poirier reached the tail end of the field on lap nine, while Kruchka was still giving chase from the runner-up spot. A long green flag period followed while Kruchka tried to chase down Poirier, before Moffit took over the spot on lap eleven.
More problems struck on lap twenty-one, when Moffit spun after contact with James Evans, but kept going. Kruchka went off course in turns one and two but recovered, and Keith Dempster finally brought out the caution with a spin in turn four.
Moffit appeared to be faster than Poirier prior to the caution and made a valiant effort to get by three lapped cars, but came up short in his quest for a second feature win at Ohsweken.
Poirier took the win, his fourth career at Ohsweken, while Moffit settled for second followed by Alain Bergeron, Chuck Hebing, and Justin Barger. The win was Poirier's first of the season, something he reflected on in victory lane.
"Looks like it was tougher this year...Sometimes we had luck on our side in the past," said the former ESS champ. "Tonight maybe we were lucky to have a good start at the beginning of the evening. At the end, the track was really tough and my starting position surely helped me a lot."
Last Sunday Poirier suffered a mechanical failure with four laps to go in a race at Cayuga County Speedway. He and his crew were definitely happy to close the deal this time.
"It feels great. Sometimes you put in question the preparation of the car," said Poirier. "In the past, we never had that kind of problem, so when you're leading the race you think about those problems you had in the past, but (this win) will get the monkey off of our back."
Again leading with four laps to go this week, Poirier was worried when the caution came out.
"I was not really confident," he said. "I knew I was good in turn three and four, but in turn one I didn't really know where to go in the turn. It looks like there was really no preferred line. It was safer to stay on the inside. When I tried the outside, the car was pushing a little bit. So I decided to keep a little bit conservative on the inside, and hope that nobody would pass me on the outside."
Heat race victories for the thirty-two car field were claimed by Jared Zimbardi, Justin Barger, and Dave Dykstra, while Barger also won the dash race in track record time, and Glenn Styres got the “B” Main win.
ESSO THUNDER STOCKS
Gord Bates and Phil Nyssen started on the front row for the ESSO Thunder Stocks Mid-Season Championship feature, and Nyssen got the early lead. Sixth starter Billy Bleich quickly made his way to the front though, and was the leader when a caution flag flew for Rodney Rutherford, who lost his drive-shaft on the backstretch. The race went green for a long stretch, during which Jamie Cox methodically picked his way forward from tenth on the grid.
Cox tracked Bleich down and worked high and low to get by, finally taking over the lead just before halfway. From there Cox pulled away until a caution flag flew on lap twenty-two for an exhaust pipe that had fallen off of one of the cars exiting turn two. Bleich had one more shot, but could do nothing with Cox, who cruised to his first feature win of the season. Bleich took second, followed by Ryan Dinning, Nyssen, and Isaac Pellisero.
Heat races for the nineteen car field were claimed by Cox and Mike Thorne.
ESSO MINI STOCKS
Steve Hess started sixth in the twenty lap ESSO Mini Stock Mid-Season Championship presented by Evers Financial, but quickly made his way into the lead. Eleventh starter Trevor Goulding and fourteenth starter Dave Bailey charged to the front, but could not catch up to Hess.
Hess negotiated traffic and tough track conditions to claim the win, followed by Goulding, Bailey, Abel Castelein, and Craig Erskine.
Heat races for the twenty-four car field were claimed by Bailey, Erskine, and Goulding.
VINTAGE CARS
Jason Powers made his first trip down to Ohsweken from the Brockville area pay off as he went to victory lane in Vintage Car action. Powers survived a close call on the last lap when he and Brian Page made contact on the backstretch. Powers held on to get the win followed by Doug Fralick, and Page.
BOMBERS
Eighth starter Jarrett Hutton drove to the lead in the twelve lap Bomber Mid-Season Championship feature and got through traffic to claim his first ever feature win. However, he was disqualified which gave the win to Jesse McDonald, followed by Karl Sault in second, Kacey Huffman, Dave Patton and Karl Andress rounding out the top five.
Heat races for the twenty-four car field were claimed by Kyle Andress, and Jesse McDonald, while Aaron Turkey got the “B” Main win.

THOROLD, Ontario (July 18) - “In all my time here,” confesses (Merrittville GM) Erica Bicknell, “that had to be the worst outcome … possibly even in the entire 59 year history of Merrittville … we all will have to just wait another week for Lucas Oil Nostalgia Night.”
With the gates already open for the storied Thorold facility's alumni and quite a display of vintage cars in place - Speedway Officials were forced to delay the night's racing and L. St. Amand Enterprises Wall of Fame Inductions due to rain.
“We could see the storm front along the escarpment … the skies had darkened, there was lightening to the west and it began to rain at the track,” informs Bicknell, “we had been tracking the storm front all afternoon and it showed severe weather on the way resulting in severe weather watches from Environment Canada … in the best interests of our race fans and teams we cancel …. almost as quick as it came in … the weather does a complete 180 and it's nice. It most definetley was not something we could predict would happen. We are extremely disappointed as are many fans and racers.”
Alumni that were already in attendance or perhaps those that were unable to make the original date should contact the Speedway Office at 905-892-8266 to make arrangements for the new date.
With the Original Pizza Logs Sportsman Division not scheduled to compete - the cars of BJ Willard and Cody McPherson were mixed in with the Vintage Cars in honor of the 20th Anniversary of their great grandfather Bill Willard Senior's Induction Ceremony 20 years ago that created the long list of honorees that we see today.
As is the case each season the new Inductees are not announced until the ceremony and 2010's will now kick off Hingston Metal Fabricators Night Saturday July 24th.
Also coming to the event will be the 50 lap Jerry Winger Memorial 358 Modified Main Event in addition to the second round of the Turn 4 Collision 4 Cylinder Triple Crown Series.
Rounding out the Lucas Oil Weekly Racing Series Program are the Original Pizza Logs Sportsman, Hoosier Stocks and the J&S Heating and Air Conditioning Modified Lites.
During the course of the evening the 2010 Grand Marshall will be selected. Whoever that is - the prize will be quite an experience Monday August 2nd - turning 30 Big Block Modifieds loose in the 1st annual Bob St. Amand Senior Memorial 100!

Friesen & Sears cop opening round segments to set stage on Saturday

Weedsport, NY - July 17, 2010 - It was a fitting finish to All-Star Weekend II after Matt Sheppard and Jimmy Phelps traded opening round 50-lappers Thursday at Brewerton Speedway and last night at Cayuga County Fair Speedway.
In one final bump and grind maneuver between DIRTcar Northeast's winningest drivers in 2010, Sheppard took the tie-breaker Saturday night at Cayuga County and collected $10,000 for his decisive victory in the 2nd Annual All-Star 100 at the home of DIRTcar Northeast.
“We fought through a lot of adversity tonight,” noted Sheppard, 28, after registering his Series-best fourth win of the season using a second car from the JB Motorsports shop. “Have to thank all the guys, I messed up the car real bad in the first race and we actually had to switch to a back-up.”
“We started last in that second one and we're coming up through when I got caught up in that accident and had to go last again. It was just a tough night right until the end.”
After powering under Phelps with plenty of contact on the low side exiting turn four, Sheppard forged the final lead change on lap 43 and opened up a dozen car-length advantage under the checkered flag. Tim McCreadie's rally to the front carried the Watertown, N.Y. driver to third-place ahead of Gypsum teammates Pat Ward and Billy Decker, the current Series points leader by just four markers over Sheppard.
In the initial 25-lap segments that ultimately worked to set the starting grid for the big 50-lap curtain-closer, Canadian standout Stewart Friesen and Tom Sears Jr. from Clay, N.Y. took top honors and each received $5,000 paydays out of the total All-Star Weekend purse that bordered on $100,000.
With the low point driver of the combined finishes in the first two races lined up on the pole, Ward (2nd, 6th) shared the front row with Friesen, who had charged from 30th to 13th in the second race. Sheppard (5th, 12th) began inside row three buckled into a fresh no. 9s Xtreme Lubricants/Bicknell machine.
Sandwiched between series stars Jimmy Phelps and Billy Decker up ahead and Brett Hearn and Ryan Phelps in his rear-view mirror, 'Super Matt' had to act quick as the racy 3/8-miler suddenly started taking down rubber and the groove was growing narrow as the laps clicked off.
Ward led in the early stages before losing the point to Jimmy Phelps on a lap 10 restart. The first of four slowdowns was the result of a flat left-front tire suffered by defending ASW 100 champion Ryan Phelps, thus ending any chance of repeating his rise to the top of the DIRTcar Big-Block world for a second straight summer.
By lap 15 Sheppard had motored into second and methodically started to slice into Phelps' once commanding lead in the 50-lap nightcap. Finally tracking down the HBR Motorsports no. 98h Wave Energy Drink-Mohawk Northeast/Troyer mount halfway through, Sheppard provided the first push on lap 35 and then watched as Phelps traded paint with Chuck Bower, who was trying his best to stay on the lead lap.
Heading into turn three the 43rd time around, Phelps became stymied behind Eric Fisher and his move up the track was just what 'Super Matt' was looking for as he dove down immediately to the fill gap. Phelps tried to regain his preferred line as the two rubbed rails entering the final corner, with Sheppard taking his first lead of the night in dramatic fashion.
“It took me a while to get to second and by that time Jimmy had built up a pretty big lead,” remarked Sheppard, following his 16th career Super DIRTcar Series win, his second of the season at Cayuga County after capturing the Hall of Fame Classic in May. “I just had to do my best to try and run him down as fast as I could.”
“I started chipping away, little by little by little, until finally catching him in traffic. He left the door open getting into turn three and for $10-grand I had to go for it,” added Sheppard, who settled for a pair of third-place finishes in last year's inaugural ASW races, both held in Weedsport.
Trailing Sheppard across the line for the second time in three nights, runner-up Phelps fell just seven laps short in his latest effort to hold off his newest nemesis for a second straight show in Series competition.
“Until the rubber went down we had the car to beat for sure,” stated the dejected driver from nearby Baldwinsville, who was also in search of his fourth tour triumph of the 2010 campaign. “I haven't seen rubber lay down at Weedsport ever, so it really shocked me to see it. We obviously weren't that good on it and lucky to hang on when it turned into one lane like that.”
“We'll take second, though, it's still pretty good with such a quality field. The bottom line is that we've got a real good race car for 90% of the tracks now that don't rubber up. We'll just go back at it again on Monday and see what we can do,” Phelps said.
Making just his fifth start in 13 Series stops this season, second-generation standout Tim McCreadie found his way into the front five for the second straight night, improving one spot from his fourth-place tally at in the fairgrounds' All-Star 50.
“Once the rubber laid down we just didn't have enough torque to run with the Big-Blocks off the corner,” said McCreadie, for the third consecutive night steering Vinny Salerno's Small-Block powered Four Star Motorsports no. 4 Keizer Aluminum Wheels-Kruger-Kosakowski Plumbing & Heating/TEO ride. The third-place showing on Saturday earned the 1997 DIRTcar Big-Block Modified rookie of the year a guaranteed starting berth in the Syracuse 200 during Super DIRT Week at the New York State Fairgrounds in October. “Matt did a good job tonight, Jimmy was real good too. Just wish something could have been done with the track to open it up a little bit.”
Winner of the first segment of ASW that was lined up using the standard Series procedure of time trials, qualifying heats and a redraw, Friesen led all 25 laps, pacing the 30-car field behind the wheel of the Pizza Logs no. 1 Jeff Daley & Sons Oil Service-Westmoreland Golf Club/TEO entry.
“It was a heckuva show tonight, definitely a different kind of situation (format) but everybody did a great job putting on this event,” said third-generation chauffeur Friesen, grandson of 1972 Cayuga County Fair Speedway points champion Stan Friesen. “With all the pyrotechnics and pageantry, it was super cool and I'm just happy to be a part of the whole deal.”
“The first race was really fun staying out front the whole way. My crew chief Matt Hearn (son of Teo Pro Car proprietor Bobby Hearn, based in New Jersey) was awesome the whole weekend. We made some calls, changed the motor yesterday and it all paid off. Especially the second time out, when we were starting back in 30th going three-wide with Billy Decker and Brett Hearn. I had to find something. We got up there along the wall in (turns) three and four and we're able to pass some guys and get up as high as we could. It was just a good deal all the way around,” added Friesen, who faded to sixth late in the 50-lap finale.
The second 25-lap segment was scheduled to line up with an inversion of every car that finished on the lead lap in round one. That made Friesen's trip back toward the front one of the most exciting as in a rare occurrence all 30 cars completed the prescribed distance. Less dramatic, yet just as satisfying, the unique format provided the perfect setting for eventual winner Sears, who finished 25th in the lid-lifter aboard the Summit Auto Group no. 62s Mullen Industrial-Trackman Equipment/Bicknell mount.
“We weren't very good in the first race until starting to come around a little towards the end,” pointed out Sears, who has contended in all 13 tour shows this year and left Weedsport ranked 11th in points. “So when we got another start close to the front I thought we had a shot at it. Starting position means a lot here and after the first race I thought if we could get back to the front we just might be able to get away with one.”
“$5,000 is definitely going to help out, will certainly help us go longer into the year. Have to thank Mullen Industrial for the opportunity, they put the cars under me, and all the guys that work on them every week. Otherwise I wouldn't be right here now,” said Sears, after celebrating his first Top-5 finish on tour this season in victory lane.
Super DIRTcar Series travelers return to action in less than 48 hours when they take the annual trek into Quebec for stops at autodromes Granby and Drummond in the annual doubleheader on Monday, July 19 & Tuesday, July 20. Read Full Release:

Matt Sheppard Collects 2nd Annual All-Star 100 Trophy At Cayuga County

James Gray found his winning groove Saturday night as the Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets ran a 'rained out' race from June 12th at Peterborough Speedway (Ont.). Gray, the defending Champion, took the lead on the 10th lap, and walked away from the field in strong fashion. Thanking his sponsors, National Exhaust, R & W Auto and his Dad and crew, he said the car was 'hooked up' the best it's been this season.
At the beginning of the race, when the Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets go 'four-abreast' to salute the fans, a tribute to long time member, Roger Riberdy, was held as the inside lane dropped one spot in his honor. Riberdy passed away this Spring and will be missed.
When the green flag dropped, Tom Kyle, in his sophomore year with the Can-Am Midgets, took the lead. Mack DeMan battled with Todd Cresswell for the second spot. Gray, starting sixth, moved up to fourth by the start of the second lap. Lap 3 saw Cresswell take the point from Kyle but Gray was already 'knocking on his door'. Cresswell remained tough and held Gray off for 6 hard fought laps. On the 10th lap Gray took command by passing Cresswell going into turn three. DeMan, Cresswell and Barry Dunn had a race of their own, all trying for the second spot. David Balych rounded out the top five.
The first caution came out in lap 11 as rookie Rob Divenanzo spun in turn two. He went out of the race with a broken oil line. Dunn began to show some sparks from his car but continued to battle with Cresswell and DeMan. On the 13th lap Kyle joined the 'roll-over' club as he entered turn two. Quick work from his crew as they removed the wing in the pits and he returned to the race, starting at the back but not loosing a lap. At the restart, Dunn broke in turn four and collected Jody Bound. Bound went into the wall and out of the race along with Dunn.
Gray resumed his lead as Cresswell held off DeMan. Balych moved to fourth with Daniel Bois now in the top five. Rob Neely, starting 12th, passed Bois for 5th place on lap 15 and set his sites on Balych. With five to go, Gray had a straightaway lead over the field and the battle behind heated up. Neely passed Balych with two to go and closed up on DeMan. The fans were on their feet as they ran side by side to the finish. Neely got it by a 'nose'. DeMan finished a strong fourth followed by Balych.
Heats were won by David Balych and James Gray.
Final finish for the Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets was... 1. JAMES GARY, 2. Todd Cresswell, 3. Rob Neely, 4. Mack DeMan, 5. David Balych, 6. Daniel Bois, 7. Greg Smulders, 8. Chris Holman, 9. Corey Moesker, 10. Tom Kyle, 11. Darren McLennan, 12. Barry Dunn, 13. Jody Bound, 14. Rob Divenanzo
Top Ten Driver Points for the Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets as of July 17, 2010...1. ROB NEELY...1111, 2. Darren McLennan...931, 3. Greg Smulders...908, 4. Todd Cresswell...897, 5. Corey Moesker...891, 6. James Gray takes Win at Peterborough Speedway

Toronto, ON, Saturday July 16, 2010: Scott Steckly driver of the No. 22 Racing/Canadian Tire/Jumpstart Dodge ran in to trouble just after the half way point of the Jumpstart 100 Saturday in Toronto and fell to the back of the pack. The driver of the No. 22 Dodge didn't give up and managed to fight his way back towards the front to cross the finish line in 11th.
Steckly was in the top ten in practice, posting the eighth quickest time, but slipped two positions to tenth in qualifying.
The driver of the Canadian Tire Dodge struggled a bit in practice. “The car wasn't as fast as we had hoped, said Steckly, and scraping the wall during qualifying didn't help” he added.
Steckly said just before the race, he just needed to be patient and work his way to the front. “The race can't be won in the first few laps, but it can definitely be lost.”
Steckly would take the green flag for the inaugural visit at the Toronto Honda Indy from tenth place on the outside of row five. The 1.765-mile temporary course at Toronto's Exhibition Place was difficult place to pass and so Steckly ran just outside the top ten in 11th place for most of the race.
Steckly was in 11th place just after the half way mark and when he got spun out on lap 21. Steckly managed to hang onto the car and stay on the track, but the No. 22 Canadian Tire Dodge had slipped deep in the field. Steckly wasn't prepared to give up; he would use all his skills and fought right to the checkered flag to gain every position possible. When checkered flag fell Steckly had over taken 12 cars to finish in 11th place.
Steckly donned a new paint scheme for the Jumpstart 100 and will showcase this car again in Edmonton on July 25th where he hopes to move up in the points. Steckly is currently fourth in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series point standings.
Finish 1) 27 Andrew Ranger, 2) Jason Bowles, 3) D.J Kenning ton 11) Scott Steckly
The Canadian Tire Jumpstart 100 was televised live on TSN.
Next up for the 22 Racing Team will be the temporary road course at the Edmonton City Centre Airport, where Steckly finished on the podium in 2009.

Scott Steckly would also like to thank his sponsors: Canadian Tire, MotoMaster, Mobil 1, Exide, Erb, AW Millwrights, Reefer Sales and Marks Work Warehouse.

STECKLY BATTLES TO 11TH AT TORONTO

Byline: Anthony Leek
Another week of high probability of thunderstorms in the forecast was the only thing that could potentially put a damper on racing at the Emo Speedway as the Amsoil Dirt Track Racing Series got underway to start off the second half of the 2010 season.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds started out the evening with three heats. In the first heat, Christopher Leek won his third heat of the year by starting on the pole and pulling away from the field. Chuck Lambert started fifth and finished second, while Kendal Gamsby took third spot. In the second heat, Brady Caul passed Anthony Visser on lap five to take the win while Matt DePiero rounded out the top three. In the final heat, Mike Wilson out-powered the other drivers to come from the back to take the checkered. Dave Rea took second place and Ken Perry finished third.
In the Street Stocks, two heats were the order of the evening. Darien Trimble took the point from second place Tyler Wickstrom while Wes Morriseau finished where he started in third. In the second heat, Scott Messner returned to the track to claim another heat win by coming from fourth spot to pass Daniel Hettinga and the rest of the crew.
In the WISSOTA Modifieds, eleven cars were split into two heats. In the first round of racing, Gavin Paull had an intense crowd-pleasing race with Jamie Davis as they battled side-by-side, lap after lap. Brad Loveday finished a satisfying third. In the second heat, Glen Strachan cleaned up, winning by a large margin over Rick Bourre and Shawn Hnatiuk.
Midwest Modified feature time had young driver Mike Wilson starting on the front row with Ken Perry on the outside. The race started out clean enough but going three wide coming out of turn two with Leek and Dave Rea resulted in some contact with Leek. A tire popped on Leek’s car but he kept it going long enough to see Rea losing his car and spinning out on the backstretch. On the restart, Wilson held off the field and slowly pulled away a bit. But Brady Caul was working his way to the front, passing six cars to settle into second. Reimer, who was being lapped, lost control in turn two and took out several cars including Gamsby, Perry, and himself. With a restart for the final two laps, Caul pulled out all the stops trying to get by Wilson but Wilson was determined. Holding his line and running a good race, Wilson took his first ever feature win and grabbed a clean sweep of heat and feature wins for the evening.
The Street Stocks only had one caution and lots of action was all around. Right on the first lap, the front row was four wide going into the corner. Messner pulled from eighth spot to claim first within a couple of laps. Westover worked as hard as Messner but by the time he came from ninth to second, Messner was gone. Rookie Nick Leininger took third spot with Lindsay Bourre taking fourth.
In the WISSOTA Modifieds, rookie Rick Bourre and veteran Gary Wilson started on the front row of the double file start. In no time at all, Loveday and Paull entertained the fans as they quickly moved to the top two spots to fight for the win. But on a restart towards the end of the feature, Paull got a bit impatient and tried to make an early move in turn one. However, he lost control and dove into the infield. There were not enough laps for Paull to catch up and finished where he had started in fifth. Loveday managed to pull away from Strachan and Jamie Davis who were fighting for position.
In the point standings, Brady Caul has now taken the lead over Gamsby by seven points. Ron Westover continues to have a massive lead over Richard Visser by twenty-six points. In the WISSOTA Modifieds, Glen Strachan manages to stay on top of the veteran driver Gary Wilson by twenty-five points. Next week, action resumes once again and during intermission is the Bicycle Races – Dash for Cash. Be sure to check out www.borderlandracing.com for all the information you need!
