EDMONTON (July 25, 2010) - JR Fitzpatrick completed his domination of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 weekend at Edmonton City Centre Airport by winning the Canadian Tire 100 presented by Konica Minolta on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Cambridge, Ont., driver had topped his competition throughout the three days of action on the 1.973-mile, 14-turn temporary road course. He was quickest in practice sessions on Friday and Saturday and won the pole in qualifying on Saturday in his No. 84 Schick Hydro Chevrolet. “The car was really good today. We’ve been battling a handling problem all weekend, but it handled pretty well in the race,” said Fitzpatrick. It was Fitzpatrick’s second win of the 2010 campaign and the sixth of his series career including a 2007 win in Edmonton. Cutting his teeth on the short tracks of Ontario, he has developed into a road-course ace – five of his career wins and both victories in 2010 have come on road courses having won at Mosport International Raceway in June. Fitzpatrick, who led all 32 laps, pulled away from his competition at the drop of the green and held off all challengers en route to the victory. Runner-up Anthony Simone looked to be closing in, but a Lap 18 caution flag put a damper on the challenge and Fitzpatrick was able to escape on the restart on Lap 21. “I saw (Simone) creeping closer and closer,” Fitzpatrick said. “We’ve been experimenting with some different fans in the car, but I turned those off during the caution and the car took off after that.” Simone, coming off an eighth-place finish in points last season, is not off to a good start in 2010 including a 30th-place finish a week ago in Toronto making his Edmonton performance critical to the season’s success. “This was just like a win for us,” said Simone, out of Holland Landing, Ont., “(Fitzpatrick) had a better car today, but we’ve struggled so much and I hope that we can build some momentum now. If the caution flag had not come out, then maybe we could have gotten to the last 10 laps and made a run. We’ll take second place. It was a good day.” Scott Steckly was able to secure third place with a last-lap pass of Trevor Seibert, who ended up with a fourth-place finish while Kerry Micks, who started alongside Fitzpatrick on the front row, finished in fifth. The battle between Steckly and Seibert was a race within the race all day long. The two cars were seemingly linked together as neither driver could gain any substantial advantage over the other. “Seibert’s car was definitely better than ours at the beginning,” said Steckly. “There aren’t very many good passing zones here and he was a little better there, too, which made it hard to set him up for a pass. Finally, there on the last lap I was able to get by him.” Rounding out the top-10 finishers were Peter Klutt, Jason Hathaway, Don Thomson Jr., Jarrad Whissell and Joey McColm. The race was slowed due to caution just one time for three laps when Daryl Harr’s car came to a stop on the frontstretch. In the championship point standings, Fitzpatrick trailed DJ Kennington by 41 points coming into the event, but the win coupled with Kennington’s 15th-place finish resulted in Fitzpatrick taking over the top spot by 31 points over Kennington. The Canadian Tire 100 presented by Konica Minolta will be telecast on TSN on Sunday, Aug. 1 at 11 a.m. ET. The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 continues its swing through Western Canada on Saturday, July 31 at Motoplex Speedway in Vernon, B.C., for the Cruisin’ The Dub 300 presented by A&W. (Halifax, NS, July 24, 2010) - It was Lonnie Sommerville in his AE McKay Builders Chevrolet Impala of Saint John, NB who crossed the line first after 100 laps of racing on Saturday night at Speedway 660 just outside of Fredericton. Sommerville raced from the back of the field twice and took advantage of a late race caution that saw him have to overcome Craig Slaunwhite (Terence Bay, NS), Shawn Turple (Enfield, NS), and Shawn Tucker (Fredericton, NB), in a “green, white, checkers” situation in order to take the honours. After the final laps were run, it was the Rockico Truck & Trailer Impala piloted by Tucker coming in second followed by Slaunwhite in his Halifax Glass & Mirror Impala. Turple's Dexter Construction Impala crossed the line just ahead of Timberlea's Wayne Smith in his Jetco Contracting/ICI Paints Impala who rounded out the top five.

This Saturday's postponement was only the second of the 2010 season - the first since May 8. In both 2008 and 2009, weather postponements reduced South Buxton Raceway's regular seasons to just 10 races.

Fitzpatrick Dominates Action At Edmonton
Race Statistics
It was a beautiful day at the Emo Speedway and the action was heated up once again at the track for flag to flag action of the Amsoil Dirt Track Racing Series. A total of thirty-six cars in six heats, two in each class, started out the night with the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds beginning the show. In the first heat, local Christopher Leek, and Winnipeg, Manitoba driver Paul Veert started on the front row. There was some great side to side action between Tylar Wilson and Veert, but Leek pulled enough away and beat Wilson who tried a last lap charge. In the second heat, Brady Caul started on the outside front row and made no mistakes, as his pole partner Ken Perry had difficulties and finished in fifth. Chuck Lambert took second, with John Hettinga finishing third. In the Street Stocks heats, Jeff Wickstrom came from last to win it over his son Tyler. In the second heat, Scott Messner dominated the field, beating Ron Westover and Richard Visser. In the WISSOTA Modifieds, Glen Strachan started in second and won the race, while Greg Ferris moved into second and Bill Witherspoon took third.
The feature for the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds was a fairly smooth one with the exception of the second lap, where Caul went sideways gathering Mike Wilson and Chuck Lambert. Caul then tried to move, but had a terrible vibration in the car finishing his night early. M. Wilson was done for the night as well, a stark contrast from his feature win last weekend. Lambert had rear tin damage and continued the race. Christopher Leek and Matthew Mutz started again in the front. Mutz had plans to pull away from the field and did, gaining a sizable lead over Leek. Lap after lap, however, a driver who has been running off and on this year at the track was gaining spots quickly. By halfway through the race, Matt DePiero had caught up to Leek and passed for second. At the same time, Mutz was slowing up, the result of a tire going flat. By lap ten, they were fighting side by side for a couple laps until Mutz couldn’t keep up. A caution came out for debris in turn three. On the restart, DePiero continued to lead, while Leek started to fight a tight race car. T. Wilson and Veert fought for third behind Leek with Wilson being victorious once again taking second. Veert claimed third by just over a couple feet past Leek, and Anthony Visser moved from twelfth to finish fifth. DePiero has now become the eighth different driver in nine weeks to win a WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. Caul continues to lead the points by a slim margin of four points to Kendal Gamsby. The Street Stocks had their share of wild racing as well. On the front row, Libby Wilson and Wes Morriseau led the largest field yet this year of twelve vehicles. The racing was almost four wide as everyone was jousting for position. The faster cars over the past few races were at the back, including Messner, Westover, and Bowman. Messner was moving up the field and was into the top five when the cars were four abreast and Messner was the odd man out and slipped off the track. He stayed there to bring out the caution just a few laps in. On the restart, Messner had to try and make his way up and was actually doing a good job. Meanwhile, J. Wickstrom was leading the race with Daniel Hettinga battling it out. Trouble arose when Lindsay Bourre went sideways in turn four. That left Messner and Visser nowhere to go. Visser had bumper damage, but Messner hit the side of Bourre, finishing his night early. Bowman was slightly involved, but only received rear tin damage. Nick Leininger turned his car into a mosquito fogger as his engine was starting to expire. He was told by officials about the heavy smoke and asked to retire early. Meanwhile, Ron Westover fought with Wickstrom for the lead for several laps. The two have been racing really well together in 2010 and it has been very exciting for fans to see such close side by side action with little to no contact. Wickstrom seemed to fight with his car later in the race and spun around at one point giving him a result that was not reflective of the better night he actually was having. Bowman, was the most incredible driver of the race as he started from last place to finish in second spot. Westover was extremely excited as he finally claimed his one hundredth feature win in the Street Stocks. He continues to lead the points by a large margin. In the WISSOTA Modifieds, nine of the ten cars that ran in the heats started the feature. Witherspoon and Ron Korpi started on the front row. The caution was tossed pretty quickly as a minor accident brought them to a slow. On the next restart trouble was brewing as the cars cluttered up in turn one and two, one car slowed up, leaving one sideways, damaging traveller, Rick Delaine. Both Gary Wilson and Delaine had to finish early due to both having terrible damage from the incident. On the next restart, Loveday spun coming to the green, but kept going. He left the track not long after. The remaining cars slowly spread out and other than Strachan, who returned to the field after changing a tire moved up two spots from fifth. Meanwhile Greg Ferris, who started seventh, pulled away from Dustin Wahl and Bill Witherspoon to win the feature. Strachan continues to lead the point standings over Gary Wilson. Thank you to everyone who has made it out to the Emo Speedway this and every weekend. Action resumes once again this weekend July 31st with the Candy-man at intermission and Powder Puff races at the end of the night!
