by Tommy Goudge (July 2, 2010) - Dustin Daggett and his crew brought a brand new car to Ohsweken Speedway on Friday night in search of the $3,000 Northern Summer Nationals winner's cheque. When the dust settled, Daggett was indeed standing in Engine Pro Racing victory lane after winning both his heat race and qualifying race, and leading every lap of the twenty-five lap feature. Devin Habiuk and Abel Castelein repeated as winners of the ESSO Thunder Stocks and ESSO Mini Stocks respectively, while Adam Reidel and Karl Sault got the twin Bomber feature wins.
"NORTHERN SUMMER NATIONALS" SPRINT CARS
Dustin Daggett and Glenn Styres started the twenty-five lap feature on the front row, and Daggett was on a mission right from the beginning. Tom Huppunen moved up from fifth to second on the first lap, and held the runner-up spot behind Daggett for the first ten laps until the caution flew for Kyle Moffit's spin in turn two.
The green flag came back out with five lapped machines between leader Daggett and the rest of the field. Glenn Styres moved back to second after falling to fourth behind Ryan Grubaugh earlier in the race, while Huppunen was starting to have problems under the hood of his #12c.
Daggett was out front by a substantial margin as the race wound down to its conclusion, while the rest of the top ten spots were up for grabs. Only five laps were left to complete when twenty-third starter Bryan Howland made it into the top ten. Howland was up to seventh when the caution and then red flew for Moffit in turn four after contact with Daggett. Moffit emerged from his damaged machine uninjured, but was done for the night. Tom Huppunen also took the #12c to the pit area, ending his bid for a repeat Summer Nationals triumph.
All eyes were on Daggett, whose right rear tire had made contact with Moffit. Daggett was not to be denied his seventh career feature win at Ohsweken though, and got the win by almost four and a half seconds over Styres, Grubaugh, Dave Dykstra, and Bobby Breen. Hard charger Howland got sixth, followed by Mike Ling, Jared Zimbardi, Dain Naida, and Jim Huppunen.
"I was kind of wondering if that right rear was going to stay up," said Daggett in victory lane. "It did get a little low on that red (flag), and the car was really tight those last couple laps, but it held up long enough."
"I just gotta say thanks to my whole crew," continued Daggett. "This is a brand new car. We put it together last week, and first night out on it, it seems to be a really good one."
The track was much more slick and dry than it has been for other Daggett wins, and he commented on it after the race:
"Last year's Canadian Nationals really made me mad, because we just went backwards in that and the car was junk," said Daggett. "We got a different shock package for here this year, and it seems to be working out really well - the car was fast tonight."
Heat races for the fifty-one car field were claimed by Kyle Moffit, Dain Naida, Glenn Styres, Dustin Daggett, Mike Ling, and Gregg Dalman. Qualifying race wins went to Daggett, Bobby Breen, Kevin Job, and Ryan Grubaugh, while Bryan Howland and Bubba Broderick got “B” MAIN race victories.
ESSO THUNDER STOCKS
Ryan Dinning and Ed McNamara started the twenty lap ESSO Thunder Stock feature on the front row, and Dinning quickly opened up a large gap on the field. While Dinning was pulling away out front, the rest of the field was involved in a torrid fight for positions within the top ten, sometimes going three and four wide.
Mike Thorne - back after a hard crash last week - eventually got free of the pack and chased Dinning down. As those two battled for the lead, eleventh starter Devin Habiuk ran both down and drove by them into the lead. Habiuk took off out front leaving Dinning and Thorne to go at it for the runner-up spot, which was eventually claimed by Thorne.
Habiuk got the feature win, followed by Thorne, Dinning, Lee Winger, and Jamie Cox.
"It's fun...I have a blast here," said Habiuk, who is now undefeated in two starts at Ohsweken in 2010. "It's a wide open track. I just stuck it on the bottom and picked off as many guys as I could...My Dad told me the car was fast on the top, so I went to the top and here I am. I didn't think I'd be winning back to back, so this is awesome!"
Heat races for the nineteen car field were claimed by Dinning and Cox.
ESSO MINI STOCKS
Abel Castelein started from the pole again this week in the fifteen lap ESSO Mini Stock feature, with Drew Spencer on the outside. Castelein got the early lead when the green flag dropped, but he couldn't break free of the pack this week.
Mike Evers was the first to move up and challenge Castelein for the top spot, while the rest of the field jostled for position, often four wide. Kevin Hilborn and Trevor Goulding eventually broke free of the pack, and moved by Evers to take their shots at Castelein.
Despite having six laps left on the board when he got into second, Hilborn could do nothing with Castelein this time after missing out on a win by mere inches last week. Castelein cruised to his second feature win in a row, followed by Hilborn, Goulding, Evers, and Steve Hess.
Heat race wins for the twenty-three car field went to Goulding, Hilborn, and Castelein.
BOMBERS
A record twenty-six Bombers signed in for action on Friday night, and were once again split into two groups for feature racing on the infield oval. The first feature found tenth starting Adam Reidel chasing down early leader Jeremy Hughes to get his second win in a row. Hughes settled for second, followed by Kacey Huffman, Jesse McDonald, and Matt Jansen.
The second feature had more good racing, as championship leader Karl Sault sliced his way from eighth to the lead and got the win. John Cote finished second, followed by twelfth starter Lee Hils, Matt Smith, and Chris Rivers.

Paul Noakes and Tim Martin team up and ready
to do battle in PMRA Pro Modified racing
And with a broken engine in the Corvette, Noakes took the engine and drivetrain out of his Funny Car, stuffing the Paul Noakes Racing 526-cubic inch Veney Supercharged Hemi into the G-Force Race Cars built Corvette. A PSI Supercharger sits on the engine, and a Lenco three-speed gets the power to the rear wheels.
Other than one year in 1998 driving a Pro Modified for Bill Denney, Noakes said he was getting comfortable with driving the Sting Ray.
While power between an Alcohol Funny Car and Pro Modified is similar, and they are both short-wheelbase, front-engined cars, a Funny Car has a central driving position while a driver opens a door and gets into drive a Pro Modified like a street car.
“I'm getting used to the driver's seat,” he said. “It's nice to be able to see the track,” alluding to the center-placed seat in the Funny Car where the engine and blower inhibit the driver's view.
“This has worked into an ideal situation,” Noakes went on. “We came to an agreement just 10 days ago. We've thrashed every night for a week just to get here. I really have to tip my hat to the crew.”
The team consists of crew chiefs Les Mellows and Len Price, with Brian Noakes, Terry Buffett, Bill Denney, Gina and Brooklyn Noakes, Wayne Martin, Brad Winter, Gerry Gilligan, Rob Middle, Chase and Sheri Martin providing help and support.
The effort is sponsored by Harman Heavy Vehicle Specialist, Castrol Oil, Dr. Brock Rondeau and Northland Dental Centre, The Dungeon Fitness and MMA Club, NGK Spark Plugs, Performance Improvements, Prosigns and Crisp Interiors Plus Inc.
Noakes, who has many racing accolades to his credit in both Canada and the US, had driven the car well enough during the RPM Magazine Family PowerFest & Media Weekend to go up against New York's Mike Stawicki in the final, but tire shake kept him from the winner's circle.
Noakes mentioned the PMRA schedule should work out well with his family.
“Although we would run four or five IHRA nationals and did well, we were away a lot. Now I don't miss the long-distance travel and I've got lots of family time. I'm going to enjoy this. My Dad is back with me.”
He also mentioned that he has learned a lot in the driving of a Pro Modified the past couple of weeks, but felt confident the team will be a contender.
“I've been on a learning curve and I hope I'm a fast learner,” he said. “We're going to run all the PMRA events and I want to thank the PMRA for a solid class and working with the teams at the races.”
The Noakes and Martin Racing Team will be just one of many PMRA Pro Modifieds to take to the track this weekend at the Canadian Nitro Nationals July 2-4 at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park. The PMRA race will be round two in the race series for 2010.
With an eye on providing a diversified and entertaining program of racing, Toronto Motorsports Park management will present competition in the sport's top classes, Top Fuel Dragster and Nitro Funny Car, as well as Jet Car action, and a round in the Can-Am Stock/Super Stock Series.
With close to 8000 horsepower on tap, cars in the Top Fuel Dragster and Nitro Funny Car divisions are the fastest-accelerating cars on the planet, and are rarely seen in Canada, but Toronto Motorsports Park will present some of the best in the sport, including those of former International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) champions Spencer Massey, Del Cox and Dale Creasy.
Canadians will be well-represented as Todd Paton and Fred Farndon will gear up and make their Top Fuel passes down the Cayuga quarter-mile.
The action gets underway Friday July 2 with a qualifying round in the PMRA and Quick 32 Sportsman Series, plus the first of several runs by the 300-mph Jet Dragsters of Black Ice and Terminator, starting at 8:00 pm.
Qualifying in both the PMRA and Quick 32 takes place Saturday morning and afternoon, and then the nitro cars take to the track in two sessions, at 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm. Elimination rounds will be held for Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and the third of four PMRA qualifiers will take place. Fans will then be treated to a fireworks display and live music on the TMP grounds.
The Top Fuel Dragsters return Sunday at 1:00 pm for more match-ups, and eliminations will take place in all classes throughout the day, with final rounds scheduled for 5:00 pm.
Ticket prices for this must-see event range from $20 on the Friday for an adult to $40 on the Saturday, $30 on Sunday with a weekend pass available for $80. Youth and children passes are also available, as well as weekend camping.

About the Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA):
The Pro Modified Racing Association,
www.PMRA.ca
, was organized late in 2004, started racing operations in 2005, and is entering its sixth year of operation in 2010. The PMRA is a self-governing organization with input from its teams, and adheres to the technical and safety rules as outlined by the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) and the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA).
In 2010 the PMRA will compete at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario and the South-western Ontario track of the Grand Bend Motorplex.
Cars in the PMRA capture the true spirit of hot rodding, and the class is one of drag racing's most exciting and colorful classes, offering a diverse group of race cars with 2,500-horsepower-plus engines in supercharged, nitrous-powered, or turbocharged format.
Combining classic body styles and modern equipment, constructors are permitted, within established rules and parameters, to modify and enhance the cars in both appearance and performance. The cars are fuelled by gasoline or methanol, propelling them down the quarter-mile in low six-second times at over 230 miles per hour. The PMRA provides drag race fans the opportunity to see, hear, and experience the popular Pro Modifieds, known as "the world's fastest door slammers".
Several of the PMRA events are run in conjunction with the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts,
www.Quick32.ca
, offering fans a great show of drag racing.

Former Funny Car standout to drive Corvette Pro Modified for 2010 season
BARRIE, ONTARIO (July 1, 2010) - Tim Martin and Paul Noakes have pooled their talent and racing equipment to form a new Pro Modified team which brings a lot to the table in Pro
Modified Racing Association competition.
After racing in the PMRA last season, Martin, of Barrie, Ontario got together with former Alcohol Funny Car driver Paul Noakes of London, Ontario recently and began this alliance which will see Noakes drive the Corvette Pro Modified for the remainder of the PMRA year.
Noakes, who was a top contender in the IHRA Alcohol Funny Car ranks for over 20 years, decided to get into the doorslammer after the IHRA closed the door on the Funny Car class.
Martin has been experiencing back issues, and has been advised not to drive.
“Paul will drive the rest of the season,” Martin stated recently during some Pro Modified competition and shake-down passes at the Grand Bend Motorplex. “He was our first choice. No-one else will be in the car.”
Danny Johnson Takes Show North In DIRTcar 358-Mod Series Stop At Edelweiss
*Sylvain Buisson Photo Attachment
“Pete's pretty good, didn't really think I was going to catch him,” remarked Johnson, 50, after leaving the province of Quebec atop the 358-Modified Series point standings following round two of the 12-race tour. “He got caught behind a few slow cars and I got some momentum up on the outside and I was able to get by him that way.”
An easy assessment of an otherwise hard-fought victory for Johnson, like Bicknell, a three-time overall Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Champion, although his last title came in 2000 while Pete captured his latest crown in '08. Johnson was forced to qualify through the consolation round and his win placed him outside row 11 in the 32-car field to begin the 100-lap main event.
Just two yellow flags slowed the action, with Johnson carving his way through the pack to blast by Bicknell on lap 76 while Clair mirrored the move 13 circuits later before running out of time to complete late-race rally. Bicknell hung on for third followed by David Hebert, event sponsor Eric Gauvreau, Clement Therrien, Danny and Tim O'Brien, with Jean Boissonneault and American Dale Planck rounding out the Top-10.
Bicknell shot off from his pole-position start amidst a flurry of fireworks on Canada Day at the Cantley, Que. oval. Front row partner Bobby Herrington followed in line as did class rookie Luke Whitteker and Tim O'Brien, and that's the way the leaderboard read over the initial 10 circuits.
Other than Johnson, who was mired deep in the pack and pulling off three-wide maneuvers from the outset, Danny O'Brien was the fastest among the front-runners as he cracked the front-five by lap 15. Following the first yellow flag on lap 21 for a turn one spin by second-generation driver Stephane LaFrance, O'Brien renewed his bid to track down Bicknell and was solidly in second with 30 laps complete.
Lap after lap the two BRP Chassis contended for the lead, Bicknell sticking low while O'Brien hung the Global Warranty machine up high looking for an even faster way around. Their dauntless duel was put on hold one more time when LaFrance ended up sideways between three and four, this time involving Denis Gauvreau on the lap 39 slowdown.
Back under green, Bicknell and O'Brien continued to hover ahead of the field, with Eric Gauvreau, Hebert and Clair in closest pursuit while Johnson lurked in the sixth position at the halfway mark. And 50 consecutive laps of non-stop action was the proper prescription for D.J. as he navigated the slick third-miler to perfection, gaining the most ground using the far inside of the track in his relentless charge forward.
O'Brien slipped past Bicknell for a short-lived lead on lap 53, yet even after Bicknell returned to the point the next circuit all eyes focused on Johnson as he cleared a path to the front. The 'Doctor' dropped Hebert to sixth on lap 58, dumped O'Brien back to fourth three laps later and grabbed second from Clair on lap 64. A half straightaway filled with traffic separated Bicknell from his newest pursuer, yet Johnson needed only a dozen circuits diminish the gap and sweep past Bicknell with still a quarter of the race still remaining.
“We chose to take the short way (low groove) around tonight,” added Johnson, who holds the record of eight straight 358-Modified Series wins set in 2000, the same year he established the all-time standard of 15 tour triumphs logged in a single season. “You could really maintain your momentum up higher but it was also real easy to slip up running the outside.”
“We were just working real good and the car was so good I could put it wherever I needed to go. Once I got ahead I was able to move back to the bottom, just had to hold my line and stay out of trouble after that,” said Johnson, a third-place finisher in the tour at Merrittville (Ont.) Speedway in May, to provide him a 15-point advantage over Bicknell in the current standings.
Settling into 11th on the initial start, Clair was content with a runner-up tally although he hinted that a longer race may have provided a far different outcome as his ResistO no. 22 Batiments JDL-Bert Transmission/Bicknell mount appeared to grow faster as the laps dwindled.
“We're certainly happy with second, those are some valuable points toward the overall championship,” figured Clair, 37, who vaulted from 14th to third on the points chart looking to match his tour title garnered in 2007. “I think I'm in a good position now with some of the races coming closer to my home. I think if I had more laps tonight I could've caught the 27 car, maybe even get by if the timing was right.”
While Clair ended the night challenging for the top spot, Bicknell was relegated to holding onto the show position despite a dominant performance given three-quarters of the way.
“It's a hard thing to do when you're starting on the pole, just don't know what kind of pace to go and don't really know where everybody else is,” divulged Bicknell, 55, after chasing two of his own chassis across the line while Hebert, Gauvreau, Therrien, O'Brien, Boissonneault and Planck also sported designs by the internationally acclaimed St. Catharines, Ont. car builder. “You're kind of a sitting duck, once they make their move and get by its pretty tough.”
“Once Danny was there I knew I'd be in trouble, he was so quick on the outside he could just pick up the throttle. I was a little loose coming off (turns) and that hurt me, same with Mario, he was much better coming off the corners than I was. At the start I wanted to make sure I saved the tires. In the end we just had a little too much gear and these guys had a little better set-up through the slick stuff than I did,” noted Bicknell, DIRTcar Racing Northeast's all-time winningest 358-Modified driver with 208 features, including five in 2010.
Racing on the Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified champ trail is off for the next two months before returning to the forefront in Canada over Labor Day Weekend with the traditional Small-Block Series stop at Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday, Sept. 5 for the third 100-lapper backed by Jiffy Auto Service.
SKIDMARKS
A stellar field of 38 Small-Block racers ---16 drivers making their 2010 series debut--- signed in Thursday at Edelweiss representing the host province of Quebec, neighboring Ontario and bordering United States. Easily the greatest car count of the season at Serge Lagace's wide third-miler nestled in the hilltops of the Ottawa suburb of Cantley, 15 was the top total reached previously this season in the predominantly French-speaking territory. With the grandstand seating capacity of 3,500 on the verge of being filled by feature time, the 18th tour event staged at Edelweiss provided a top-notch performance with 100 laps run off in just 30 minutes as only two caution periods slowed the action..
Despite failing to declare his intentions at the start of the new decade, Pete Bicknell was at it again as the No. 42 Lucas Oil Products entry powered by an Engine Research & Development speedplant made the 9-hour (7 before bad directions) haul from its garage in the Niagara Frontier. “Just went out to grab a bite to eat and ended up here,” smiled Bicknell, the veteran three-time Mr. DIRTcar 358 titlist with 19 career tour victories (5th all-time) tucked neatly under the Merrittville Speedway owner's belt. “We've got a lot of our cars here tonight, its always good to deal direct with your customers when you get a chance.” 'Mr. Small-Block' was quick out of the box, posting fast time and copping his heat before grabbing the pole in the customary pre-race draw. The feature provided a similar story until Johnson spoiled Pete's parade with a dramatic rally from the rear of the field.
On the other end of the Series spectrum was first-year tour follower Travis Braun from Jordan Station, Ont., who was 29th fastest in Bilstein Time Trials before a 3rd-place finish in the consi lined up his Biedas Powersports no. 76 Brian's Tire Repair-DBN Drywall/Bicknell machine 26th on the 32-car grid. “This is a real learning experience for us this year, haven't even raced at half the tracks on tour so we're really just getting our feet wet,” remarked Braun, 26, another Merrittville regular who worked his way through the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified ranks. “My wife is on maternity leave this year so it's a good time to take advantage.
Along with his maiden voyage to Edelweiss where he ran all 100 laps to finish 18th, new to Braun in '10 will be series stops at Granby and Drummond in Quebec, along with Brockville Ontario Speedway and Mohawk Int'l Raceway in New York. Tagging along all summer will be his wife Alicia and baby son Carter, who was born in April of this year. Alicia was crowned Merrittville's go-cart champion in 2009, ending a whirlwind season highlighted by nine feature wins.
POT HOLES: Vermont invader Todd Stone suffered a broken oil pump in hot laps and was the lone car unable turn any competitive laps during the night … Third-generation standout Stewart Friesen missed qualifying in both the heat and consolation round as the team replaced a harmonic balancer that broke while the Kendrick Racing no. 6* Global Warranty/Bicknell mount parked in line waiting for his heat. Edelweiss regular and program sponsor Eric Gauvreau provided a new part for a minimal fee, helping Friesen land a 17th-place finish after starting 30th … A moment of silence was spent prior to the feature start for DIRTcar 358-Modified and Pro Stock driver Mitchell Jock who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 27. A tragic year already for the north country community as fellow Akwesasne, N.Y. racer Mark Smoke lost his life in March after a car accident at the age of 38. Teenager Kristian Smoke is now following in his father's tire tracks enjoying his rookie season at Mohawk Int'l Raceway back in the states … Prior to qualifying run, three separate cloudbursts sent teams ducking for cover inside their haulers yet by race time skies cleared and temperatures in the 50s prevailed once the sun went over the horizon.
Cantley, QUE - July 1, 2010 - Danny Johnson has been winning up and down the Atlantic Coast for the past three decades. Thursday night the 'Doctor' charted new territory, putting on dazzling performance in French territory to score his first-ever victory at Autodrome Edelweiss in the headline Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship Series 'Gauvreau Top Soil 100.'

books as the first-ever victor at a particular track. Kraig Kinser accomplished that feat at North Central Speedway in Brainerd, Minnesota in 2008 as the World of Outlaws made their debut at the high-banked 1/3-mile.
Kinser and the rest of the World of Outlaws will return to North Central Speedway this weekend on Saturday, July 3 to help celebrate the Independence Day Weekend with a full night of racing. The event will be one of two for the World of Outlaws in the state of Minnesota this season. The younger Kinser has five career Top-10 finishes in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, with four of those being Top-Five performances.
“Any track that you've had success at you like to get back to, because you know you can run well there,” said Kinser. “If you have everything working right, there is no reason why you can't run good there again.”
Kinser heads to North Central Speedway with two finishes of seventh or better in his last three races. He ran fifth at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas last Saturday night and was seventh on Thursday night at Huset's Speedway in South Dakota. The third generation driver is just 14 points out of the Top-10 in the World of Outlaws Championship standings on the strength of 15 Top-10 finishes with three of those being Top-Five performances.
“Everyone is pretty close right now,” noted the third generation driver when asked about the level of competition with the World of Outlaws. “A couple of guys have good streaks going. Anyone has a chance. There are a lot of great cars out here right now and a lot of tough competition. It's definitely going to be a dogfight when we get there on Saturday.”
Kinser has had a number of strong run cut short by bad luck this year, as he and his team continue to feel each other out and mesh in his first year back driving for his father Steve's team aboard the Quaker State Maxim. He had a great deal of success driving for his dad earlier in his career, claiming eight overall World of Outlaws wins and the 2005 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award.
“I think things are coming around, though every time I say that though it usually doesn't keep the momentum going,” he stated. “We'll just keep our head down and keep working hard at it to keep competitive every night. It's definitely a work in progress and we are learning a lot as we go as well.”
Kinser is paired this season with rookie crew chief Mike Kuemper, who will be his future brother-in-law. The team added 20-year old Joey McCarthy to the mix a little earlier this season, in addition to having Kraig's sister Stevie helping turn the wrenches. With all three being in their 20's, they are one of the youngest if not the youngest team on the circuit, competing against many drivers and crews that have been racing longer than they have been alive.
“We're all young and about the same age and work well together,” he said with a smile when asked about his crew. “There isn't an age different so we all get along and have fun out there and that's what it's all about.”
On the night he won at North Central Speedway, Kinser won a heat race to earn a spot in the dash, where he finished fourth to earn a second row starting spot in the main event. He was running second near the halfway point of the race when leader Joey Saldana broke, putting him in the top spot, with Lucas Wolfe and his father Steve behind him on the restart. Just prior to that caution, Kinser had gotten around Wolfe after the pair had a spirited battle for a number of laps for the second spot. Kraig led the final 15 laps to pick up the win over Wolfe, who led seven laps and his father wound up third.
“We raced with Lucas (Wolfe) up there and that was pretty enjoyable,” noted the native of Bloomington, Indiana. “I like racing with Lucas, he's a great guy. With my dad finishing third, I didn't get to race with him too much that race. It's always fun when you get to race close and hard with people you have a lot of respect for.”

LaSALLE, Ill. - July 2, 2010 - When the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series invades LaSalle Speedway on Thursday, July 8, NASCAR superstar Kasey Kahne will be waiting. As co-promoter of Kasey's King of LaSalle Presented By Budweiser and a huge dirt track racing supporter, he will lead the ceremonies in the Showdown for the Bud Crown finale at a bullring where the Outlaws are returning for the first time since 2004.
Kahne will be racing his NASCAR machine at Chicagoland Speedway later in the week, but given his roots in dirt track racing in the Pacific Northwest it's only fitting he gears up for that event by promoting the World of Outlaws return to LaSalle, which includes a one-of-a-kind pyrotechnics display that will light the sky throughout the night.
"My dad was involved in sprint car racing so we went to those races a lot and I grew up around it," said Kahne, a native of Enumclaw, Wash., who fields two full-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series teams. "I started racing mini-sprints and then moved on to racing sprint cars. I've raced ever since. I try and give back to the World of Outlaws series whenever I can. Fortunately we were able to work out a deal for me to promote a few World of Outlaws events, with LaSalle being the final race in the four-race series."
Although his schedule as one of NASCAR's premier drivers is quite hectic, Kahne still makes time for his World of Outlaws teams, which includes the #9 Budweiser car driven by current series points leader Joey Saldana and the #91 Great Clips car driven by Paul McMahan.
"I spend as much time at Kasey Kahne Racing that I can," he said. "If I'm not racing or at a sponsor function, I'm at the shop. We are based in Mooresville (N.C.) and it allows me more time to spend with the guys. Most of the team is close family so we all grew up together and now we all work together. Unfortunately, I'm not able to be at every race, but I trust the team to do what's best and win races. Winning 20 races with Joey Saldana and the Bud car last year was pretty special."
The action at LaSalle Speedway, which is centrally located in northern Illinois and southwest of Chicago, will no doubt be fast and furious. Danny Lasoski won the last World of Outlaws event at the racy high-banked oval in 2004. Other World of Outlaws winners include Tony Stewart Racing's Steve Kinser (1999 and 1994), Stevie Smith (1998), Mark Kinser (1997), Sammy Swindell (1996) and Dave Blaney (1995).
"The Chicago area has always been a great market for NASCAR and I look forward to seeing the Outlaws at LaSalle," Kahne said. "We had a great crowd at Sedalia and the fans really showed their support for the World of Outlaws series. I anticipate another good showing at La Salle to wrap up the race for Bud crown."
Kahne will be focused on his role as promoter on Thursday at LaSalle. For those who have purchased tickets by July 5, he'll be available for an exclusive Question-and-Answer session. He'll also be involved in the opening ceremonies and ultimately as the special Showdown for the Bud Crown trophy is presented.
"I really enjoy being there and watching the guys race and supporting them," Kahne said. "I enjoy racing in Outlaws races too, but this is a competitive series and a lot goes into racing these cars. It is tough to jump in and race once every couple of months. It will nice to be able to sit back and watch the guys do what they do."
The Showdown championship battle tests drivers on three very different types of tracks. Rounds 1 and 2 were at high-banked Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn., and Round 3 was at the big half-mile Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Mo.
Jason Meyers is leading the Showdown for the Bud Crown championship, followed by Paul McMahan (-36), Steve Kinser (-39), Donny Schatz (-76) and Danny Lasoski (-102). Joey Saldana won the opening round at Volunteer Speedway, with Meyers winning the second night at Volunteer and Jason Sides capturing the third leg at Missouri State Fair Speedway. Drivers earn points in the Showdown championship during time trials, heat races and the main event, so heading into LaSalle the fight for the crown is wide open. Following Kasey's King of LaSalle on Thursday night, the top three in points will share a $15,000 bonus.
Thursday night's event will kick off with Kahne meeting fans who purchased advance tickets, which are only $29 for adults and $9 for children. Adult tickets increase to $35 on the day of the show. Tickets can be purchased by going to
www.worldofoutlaws.com/tickets
or by phone during regular business hours at 704-795-7223.
General camping (no hookups) also is available at LaSalle Speedway on Wednesday and Thursday, making it the perfect destination for those early arrivers to the Chicagoland region for the weekend's NASCAR event.

NASCAR Star Kasey Kahne Crowning Bud Showdown Champion at LaSalle
World of Outlaws Sprint Cars return to LaSalle Speedway July 8 for first time since 2004
July 2, 2010 (London, Ontario) 2010 is becoming the season of Sheridan as the division points leader logs another win in the NASCAR Late Model division at Delaware Speedway. It was Whelen night and Emergency Service Personnel and their families were our guests for the evening.
As the race got underway, Rick Emery (14) had lap one but Scott Lindsay (20) grabbed the lead at lap 2 and held on until almost the end but Sheridan's relentless run for the win and a late-race caution combined to give the #52 yet another trip to Victory Lane. Sheridan has started the race in 11th spot and worked his way up to 4th by half-way.
Andrew Gresel (81) was running second until a connection with Mark Watson (78) at lap 15 causing the race's first caution and a black flag to Watson. That moved Emery back up to second place. Gresel was also nicked in a multi-car spin-out at lap 18, putting Sharpie's yellow flag up again. School teacher Doug Stewart was also caught up. During that caution, Watson drove to pit road and exited his car. He hadn't been involved in that particular incident and his car's problems were unknown by our deadline.
With 11 laps to go, Scott Lindsay had a half-a-straightaway lead on Ron Sheridan when Marc Jacobs (8) did a solo spin and the caution flag flew again. The track was barely into green when Doug Stewart (2) got clipped and popped his right front tire and an all-too familiar ending to a race for Stewart this year - the end of a Whitworth Towing hook.
The remaining laps saw Ron Sheridan sticking to Lindsay like glue until lap 32 when the 52 took the lead and logged his fourth win of the season.
Steve Robblee did not race tonight because of what we're told is a sore back after a crash in last Friday night's Maple City Tire 100.
There was a false start in the Delaware Super Stocks feature as a half-dozen cars connected on turn two, including defending champion Jason Lidster. A complete restart was necessary with all of the cars identified as “accident cars” sent to the back of the pack.
Darrell Lake (77) got the pole for the restart and held on, refusing to give Jared Shields (7) a lane high or low. At lap 17, with Lake still in the lead, Jake Ott (60) finally worked his way around Shields for second place. At lap 20, Kris Lawrence (28) pushed Ott aside and took second and a lap later Scott Nagy (99) took a spin, bringing out a caution.
In the final couple of laps, Lawrence made some aggressive moves to get around Lake but didn't quite make it happen. Lake took the feature followed by Lawrence and then Ott, Jason Lidster (11) and Stephen Richmond. Nearly everyone who got to the microphone praised Lake for all the work he's done to get back out, in the past couple of weeks.
Three lead changes early on in the Demar Aggregates Trucks 25-lap feature and once Paul Fothergill -who had been running fourth in the standings - got out front, that's where he stayed.
Gary Triska had the pole. At lap four, Chad Rijnen took over and Fothergill got it two laps later. With 33 out in a commanding lead, the 00 of Shawn Johns made a surge for second and took it from Rijnen at lap 16. Johns finished second followed by Rijnen. Michelle Korcina (99) was fourth and Gary Adriaensen (55) who had been leading the division, finished fifth.
The next race night is Wednesday July 7th - Delaware's Summer Showdown presented by APC featuring Kyle Busch, David Reutimann and Jason Leffler. Some tickets remain for this spectacular event pitting some of NASCAR's biggest stars against our local favourites. All the details are on
www.delawarespeedway.com
.
Bring your Showdown ticket stub to Delaware on Friday July 9th and get 50% off admission. And we've got a special purse for our King of the Hill spectator race - the top 3 finishers will share in a total of $1000 cash!
