July 7th 2010
It's no big secret. If you offer a short track stock car driver a big cheque at the end of the night, they'll race you for it. Kawartha Speedway fans will be treated to the season's hottest show with the 7th annual Summer Sizzler - Friday, July 9th. The 150 lap show for the track's NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Models and special guests will be run in a trio of 50 lap segments and pay a hefty $3000.00 to the overall winner. 2007 track champion Larry Jackson has to be considered an early favourite heading into the showcase start. After taking a brief hiatus, the Oakville, Ontario veteran is back in action for 2010. Following a pair of starts in 2009, the professional firefighter has combined forces with Mississauga's Bruce Rankin for a renewed assault on Kawartha's headline division.
“I was a bit off my game for the first few weeks,” said Jackson with a smile. “It was tough to find my marks on the track and to get into my usual rhythm out there. I knew I hadn't forgotten how to drive, so I just needed to settle-down a bit and stop thinking about things too much. That's when things started to fall into place the way I'm used to having them.”
After 3 events on the track's 10th Anniversary schedule, Jackson's #84J sits second in the late model standings, 5 behind Dan McHattie - but just 3 markers ahead of opening night winner Chris Morrow. The top 10 runners in the division are separated by just 73 heading into the big event.
To make things interesting for the fans and drivers alike, the show will be run with a heads-up format - meaning that the winner of the first qualifying heat will earn the inside front-row starting spot for the first 50 lapper. From there, each segment will have a complete inversion and use a point system similar to golf. The segments will pay points based on finishing positions - with the winner earning 1 point, the runner-up 2, third place 3 points and so on through the field. The driver with the lowest overall point total will be declared the winner.
To handle the extra racing expected, the track will open at 2:00 with the first green flag at 6:00 Friday, July 9th. The Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stocks and Better Carpet Thunder Cars will also be part of the show. Fans can get all the Summer Sizzler details at

Kawartha regulars will also be pleased to know that the track's new permanent grandstands will be in place starting this weekend.

**** NASCAR CANADIAN TIRE SERIES DRIVER LEADERS ****
“We were really good early on”, stated O'Brien. “The handle really went away just after halfway and it was all we could do. The track was really slick, and we just used up the tires in the first half of the race”.
After taking Friday night off, the O'Brien team was back at the track on Saturday night at the Brockville Ontario Speedway. In his qualifying heat, Danny started sixth and quickly marched to the front. O'Brien needed just one more lap to score the heat race win, but settled for second place at the checkered flag. Starting the 30-lap feature from 11th place, O'Brien again patiently worked his way to the front. In just two laps, he was inside the top ten, and when the first yellow was displayed on lap 11, O'Brien was already up to sixth place. On the restart, he overtook the fifth position and began to run down the leaders. With 19 laps competed, O'Brien moved into third place, and stayed there for the remaining laps.
“We were hoping for more tonight”, stated O'Brien after his third place finish. “We will be back tomorrow night at Cornwall looking for a little better performance.
After getting the car ready on Sunday for Cornwall Speedway, the O'Brien team traveled east on Highway 401 to Cornwall. After finishing second in his qualifying heat, O'Brien rolled off the starting grid for the 30 lap feature from the ninth position. On lap 13, O'Brien cracked the top and continued to gain ground on the leaders. Just one lap later, he was up to fourth place. A caution on lap 23 bunched the field up, and just after the ensuing restart, O'Brien picked up one more position, and placing him in third. O'Brien finished the race in third place, matching his results from the previous night.
“Once again, third place isn't what this team is looking for, we want to win races, and gain some ground in the points”, states O'Brien. “We have made some major gains over the last few weeks, and we are inching closer to where we have been in past years, but we have a little more work to do yet”.
This coming weekend, O'Brien will be back at Brockville Ontario Speedway on Saturday night, Cornwall on Sunday, and then a special Monday night race at Chapman's Can Am Motorsports Park. It will be a SUNY Canton 358 Modified Series Race.

O'Brien Ends Holiday Weekend With a Pair of Third Place Finishes
Craig Revelle - Finish Line Web Design
July 7, 2010
It was a busy Canada Weekend for Danny O'Brien and his Global Warranty team, with three nights of racing, including a Canada Day Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified Series race at Edelweiss Speedway, near Gatineau, Quebec.
A special Thursday, Canada Day celebration took place up in the mountains near Gatineau, Quebec. Edelweiss Speedway hosted the Small Block Modified series. After posting the 16th fastest time in qualifying, the team made some adjustments on the Global Warranty, 1000 Islands RV, Pat's Radiator, 103.7 BOB FM, Jackson's Landscaping & Property Maintenance, Murdock's Cement Finishing, Stover Bus Lines, Kendrick Racing team prepared Bicknell car before the heat race. The adjustments seemed to work, as O'Brien finished second in the qualifier, locking him into the 100 lap feature, and placing him in the redraw for one of the top 12 starting spots. O'Brien drew the seventh starting position, and once the green flag dropped, he quickly worked his way to the front, things seemed to be going O'Brien's way in the early stages, and just before halfway, he challenged for the lead. On lap 53, O'Brien gained the top spot, just for one lap, and at this point, the handling on O'Brien's car began to deteriorate. O'Brien slipped to seventh at the finish.
Danny O'Brien had a busy Canada Day Weekend.

Jamie McMurray
No. 88 Suave Men Chevrolet
“I'm happy to be back with the 88 team this weekend at Chicagoland with a great sponsor like Suave Men. I know the whole JRM organization is riding high after Dale's win in the 3 car last week. Everyone was excited for that victory - myself included. I'm thinking we can carry a lot of that positive momentum to Chicago this week. Chicago isn't a track I've had a lot of success at, but it's a fun place to drive.
“My goal is to go out there and win races for these guys. Plus, we've got some added motivation with Suave Men putting up the head-to-head challenge too. We're going to be taking on the 7 team in a competition which factors in our practice speeds, qualifying efforts and race results throughout the weekend. The winning team is going to have a donation made to The Dale Jr. Foundation courtesy of Suave Men. So it's all for a great cause.”
Danica Patrick
No. 7 Go Daddy Chevrolet
“There's no doubt New Hampshire was a tough race for our Go Daddy team. By the end of that race I had a lot of good info I can use next time around. But we're moving on. It was a learning experience and that's exactly what I need right now. I need to be learning each and every week. When we head back there next year, I'll have a much better understanding of how to get around that place.
“Chicagoland is a track I'm a little more familiar with than Loudon. I just want to get out there and start logging laps in practice on Friday with our Go Daddy car. Everything is still fairly new and I'm still learning. The only way to get better is to get behind that wheel and log laps. Tony [Eury] Jr. is a great supporter and someone I can always bounce questions off of, but until I really get out there in race conditions it's hard to know what I'll need, and predict how the flow of the race will go.”
JR MOTORSPORTS NOTEBOOK -

The team with the best times will have a substantial donation made on its behalf to The Dale Jr. Foundation. It's also the second of two races featuring Suave Men as the primary sponsor of the No. 88 Chevrolet.

McMurray's average finish in those races is 6.7.
McMURRAY AT CHICAGOLAND - In six starts at the 1.5-mile track, McMurray scored one top-10 finish and has led five laps. His best finish of ninth came in 2003 driving for James Finch.
WINDY CITY STATS - The No. 88 Suave Men team, led by crew chief Tony Eury, Sr., hold three starts at Chicago. The team's best finish was a third-place showing in 2008. They've led four laps at the facility and earned an average finish of 11.7.

TORONTO, Ont. (July 7) – Jordan Szoke is on a roll, and he is showing no signs of slowing down.
The Brantford, Ont. racer comes into this weekend’s fourth and fifth rounds of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship at Mosport International Raceway unbeaten so far in 2010 and in clear command of the standings as he bids for an unprecedented fifth straight national Superbike title and seventh overall.
And if his title rivals were hoping the move to the classic 3.9km (2.459-mile) 10-turn road course might upset Szoke’s momentum, they may want to think again. Mosport is one of the 31-year-old Szoke’s favorite tracks, and he has won here more than any other racer, with seven victories to his credit. That tally includes a sweep of the doubleheader in 2006 and 2009.
With his perfect total of 164 points the Waznie Racing / BMC Ciclo Werks / DeWildt Honda CBR1000RR rider enjoys a 54-point margin over Francis Martin.
“It’ll be a dogfight both days,” said Szoke at a series press conference at Toronto’s Hard Rock Café on Wednesday. “We have our work cut out for us. But I think this is the track on the schedule that best suits the Honda. Our bike is fast on the straights and excels in fast corners, and that’s what Mosport is all about.”
Martin looks the most likely threat to Szoke’s supremacy. Riding the factory radX HD / BMW Motorrad Canada BMW S1000RR the Sherbrooke, Que. ace took a pair of podium results in the most recent Parts Canada Superbike round at Race City Motorsport Park to move up to second in points, as the new bike enjoys a stellar debut season.
And Martin’s isn’t the only BMW showing a good turn of speed. His teammate Mike Ferreira of Mississauga, Ont. is sixth in points in his rookie Superbike season while Andrew Nelson of Kars, Ont. is fourth in the standings riding the Orion Motorsports / BMW Motorrad Canada-backed entry.
A fourth S1000RR will also be at Mosport in the hands of Mississauga, Ont. star Matt McBride, with backing from Budds’ Motorrad and Riders Choice.
Another sensation through the first half of the season has been Cochrane, Alta.’s Cody Matechuk. The 16-year-old leads the HJC Pro Rookie of the Year standings and sits third in Superbike points, with 90, riding the Acceleration Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000.
A fast Suzuki also belongs to perennial Superbike frontrunner Kevin Lacombe of Granby, Que. The Lacombe Racing GSX-R1000 rider has two podium finishes but crashed in round three in Calgary and is now seventh in the standings.
The Honda challenge includes Keene, Ont.’s Jodi Christie (Jodi Christie Racing / Durham Honda Powerhouse Honda CBR600RR), who was second in the season opener, and Frank Trombino of Kleinburg, Ont. (ProStar Motorsports / Sturgess Cycle Honda CBR1000RR), who has won twice at Mosport.
Uxbridge, Ont.’s Alex Welsh is only eighth in points for the Competition Systems Kawasaki Race Team but is just 11 points behind third-place Matechuk in the standings.
This weekend’s racing also includes the fourth and fifth rounds of the national Pro Sport Bike Championship. Szoke is also trying for a fifth straight title in this class and won the first three races of the year on his Honda CBR600RR.
But Christie has been a threat to Szoke on all three occasions, finishing second each time, and only trails his fellow Honda rider by 32 points in the standings.
Matechuk has also impressed in this class and lies third in points on his Suzuki GSX-R600, while next up is Dave Estok of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. on the Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada / Ruthless Racing Buell 1125R.
Raphael Archambault of St-Colomban, Que. is another rider who brings a perfect win record to Mosport, having gone three for three in the Amateur Sport Bike class on his Archambault Racing / Centre Hamel Honda-backed Honda CBR600RR.
Archambault enjoys a 62-point lead over JHP Racing / Picotte Performance Suzuki rider Jeremie Hade Precourt of Granby, Que. while Warman, Sask. rider Bodhi Edie sits third in points on his Edie Racing / Meidl Honda Powerhouse Honda.
Brantford, Ont.’s Robert Busby comes to Mosport with a 47-point lead over fellow Buell rider Olivier Spilborghs in the K&N Filters Sport Twins standings and Ryan Appenrodt of Quesnel, B.C. tops the Honda CBR125R Challenge.
The Honda riders get three races this weekend, two on the full Mosport road course and a third on the adjacent kart track Sunday evening.
Racing action is rounded out by the first ever Canadian race for the TTXGP eGrand Prix electric motorcycle series and the Pro Honda Oils Women’s Cup.
Mosport is the third stop for the electric bikes, which opened their season at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. in May and then raced at Elkhart Lake, Wis.’s Road America last month.
Practice and qualifying for this weekend’s races will take place Friday. Qualifying will include the Pirelli SuperPole for the Inside Motorcycles Pole Position Award in the Parts Canada Superbike class. Races in all national classes will go Saturday and Sunday.
Tickets are $50 for a weekend Super Ticket in advance and $60 at the gate. Single day passes are available for $15 on Friday, $30 on Saturday and $35 on Sunday. For ticket information call 1-800-866-1072 or go to www.mosport.com.

Mosport Fast Facts
...If Jordan Szoke sweeps this weekend’s doubleheader he will tie the record for most consecutive national Superbike wins in a season, with five. Steve Crevier set the mark in 1992 and Szoke equaled it in 2002 and 2006.
…Honda has only one national Superbike championship race win at Mosport, and it came courtesy of Jordan Szoke in 1999 aboard the CBR900RR. Ironically, that year he had also brought the number one plate to Honda after winning the title for Kawasaki in 1998.
…Pascal Picotte holds the record for the most consecutive Superbike wins at Mosport with four, having swept the doubleheaders in 2004 and 2005. The only other rider to sweep a doubleheader at the track is Jordan Szoke, who did it in 2006 and last year.

The late Bruce A. and Joan Mehlenbacher will be honored for their dedication and commitment to the sport of drag racing July 9-10 as part of the Legends of Drag Racing reunion presentation in York, Pennsylvania.
The Mehlenbacher Family will be presented with a Legion of Honor award during the weekend event.
The Mehlenbachers took over the day-to-day running of the Cayuga Dragway, the oldest operating drag strip in Canada, and established a heritage and professionalism that continues to this day at the Kohler Road strip in Southern Ontario.
The Mehlenbachers, working under the NHRA flag and its “Land of NED” (Northeast Division) built the facility into a major player in drag racing, bringing in the best of the best from 1971 until 1984. The annual WCS (World Championship Series) points meet was a highlight at the track, bringing in hundreds of competitors and thousands of fans each year.
Working with Division 1 Director Darwin Doll and his wife Pat, the business relationship expanded into a close personal friendship that continues with the Mehlenbacher children.
Other recipients who will receive an individual award and their names will be placed upon a perpetual award on display at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing, York Springs, PA in perpetuity. This year's
recipients along with the Mehlenbachers will include George Nye, Palmyra, PA; Dave Heisey, Myerstown, PA; James Kerr, Holland, PA; Carol "Bunny" Burkett, Spottsylvania, VA; Bill Lynch, Huntington Station, NY; Fred Borcherdt, Newark, DE; Larry Lombardo, Bernville, PA; Alan Carpenter, Stuart, FL; Dom Rinaldi, Skowhegan, ME; Reinford Bros., Boyertown, PA, Chick DeNinno, Lottsburg, VA and Bob Harrop, Laurel Spring, NJ. The elite group will be recognized for their contributions to the sport and the industry for many years.
Canada's oldest operating drag strip has had several owners and names over the years, but the facility on the banks of the Grand River in Southern Ontario reached its apex during the Mehlenbacher years when the track was known as Dragway Park.
The former World War II Royal Canadian Air Force facility, purchased by L.B. Mehlenbacher in 1948, saw its first organized drag racing contests held in 1954.
For the next 17 years the track prospered through a series of track promoters, and was known as Kohler Dragway, Cayuga Dragway, Super Boss Dragway, and Cayuga 1320 Dragway. The track was sanctioned by the NHRA in 1967, and remained so under the Mehlenbacher years. It continued to grow in terms of fan support, physical size, and car counts, always under the watchful eye of the Mehlenbacher family as property owners.
L.B.'s son Bruce A. and his wife Joan took over the day-to-day operations of Cayuga in 1971, and for the next 12 seasons, put Cayuga on the drag racing map. It was also during this time strong professional and personal relationships developed between the Mehlenbachers and the NHRA's Division 1 Director Darwin Doll.
Bruce and Joan were very passionate about the sport of drag racing, and devoted their lives to the successful running of Cayuga. Working exclusively with the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), Bruce and Joan worked closely with Darwin and his wife Pat, and from this professional business relationship emerged a true personal friendship that continues between the Mehlenbacher family and the Doll family to this day.
Under the NHRA's Division 1 “Land of NED” and with close working ties with the Dolls, Cayuga was a major player in the sport. While special shows were held throughout the season, it was the Division 1 Winston World Championship Series (WWCS) meet in May of each year that filled the facility to near-overflow capacity with race cars and fans.
During these heady days the track saw all the top names of the sport, and fans flocked through the gates to see their quarter-mile heroes, racers such as “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, Gary Beck, Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins, “Jungle” Jim Liberman, and Joe Amato. A future superstar in the sport, Shirley Muldowney, received her Top Fuel license at Cayuga in 1973.
While Bruce A. Mehlenbacher was in charge of Cayuga at this time, the running of the track was a family affair, with wife Joan in charge of the entrance gates and admission, son Bruce Jr taking on a logistics role, and son Bill performing announcing and public relations duties. Other third-generation Mehlenbachers who helped with the successful running of Cayuga included Barbara, Andrew, Julie, and Kelly, the other children of Bruce A. and Joan, along with Bruce Jr's wife Holly.
Cayuga received many accolades during the Mehlenbacher tenure. It was named the NHRA Northeast Division's Dragstrip of the Year in 1982, won the NHRA Management Excellence Award in 1983, and Bruce Sr was named the NHRA Northeast Division 1973 Man of the Year. Dragway Park also fielded the NHRA Northeast Division Bracket Finals Team Champions in 1976 and 1983.
The track was sold in 1984, but continues to operate to this day.
As a tribute to the contribution to auto racing in Canada, the Mehlenbacher Family were also inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 1998.
The oldest two sons, Bruce and Bill, and grandson Spencer of Bruce A. and Joan Mehlenbacher continue with the drag racing legacy.
For the past several years Bruce Jr has been Director of Operations for the Pro Modified Racing Association, and the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, with the assistance of Bill and Spencer, which have developed into popular international racing venues, and their knowledge of the sport, comes from not only their parents but others in the sport such as the Dolls.
“Mom and Dad were passionate and committed about the sport of drag racing, and operated exclusively with the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA),” Bruce Jr said. “They worked very closely with NHRA's Division 1 Director Darwin Doll and his wife Pat, the business relationship developed into a true friendship a bond that continues today.
Matt Billings and the Billings team enjoyed their Canada Day weekend by spending it at the racetrack, with three consecutive nights of racing, beginning at Chapman's Can Am Motorsports Park on Friday night, Brockville Ontario Speedway on Saturday night, and then to Cornwall Speedway on Sunday.
Friday night at Can Am, Billings started from the ninth position, and struggled to make up ground on the dry slick track. At the checkered flag, Billings was up to eighth place, and after climbing out of his car, he began discussing with his team on what changes to make to the car before feature time. Billings started the 30 lap feature from the 16th position, and didn't even get the opportunity to test

the changes that were made before being caught up in a wreck on the front stretch on the second lap, ending his night early.
“We had no place to go at all”, claimed Billings. I think someone clipped one of the tires on the inside of turn four, and then there was just a pileup after that. We have quite a bit of damage to the right rear, but we will have it fixed and ready for Brockville tomorrow night”.
At the Brockville Ontario Speedway on Saturday night, Billings started second in his qualifying heat race, and maintained that position throughout the distance. Lining up tenth for the 30-lap feature, Billings was hopeful that the changes they made to the car would work. Fighting for forward bite off the corners continued to be a problem during the feature, at Billings came home in the ninth position.
“It was a struggle tonight, but I think we learned something. The track was really dry and slick tonight, and its tough to make up any ground when the track is like this. We will keep working at it, and hopefully next week will be better”.
Billings ended the Canada Day Weekend with a visit to Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday night. After a fourth place finish in his qualifying heat, Billings started the 30 lap feature from the 12th position in his Billings Automotive, Stealth Racewear, Race 101, Turn One High Performance Steering Systems, Pastime Motors, Babe Design, Finish Line Web Design, Carquest and Engine Research sponsored Bicknell car, and worked his way up through the pack. At the checkered flag, Billings finished in seventh place, ending the weekend with a solid finish.
Looking ahead to this coming weekend, Billings tentatively has just one race scheduled, at the Brockville Ontario Speedway on Saturday night. Chapman's Can Am Motorsports Park doesn't have the Modifieds scheduled for this coming week. Billings will his Brockville, Ontario home for North Carolina, where he will get to test a pavement Late Model at the famous Hickory Speedway, as part of the Race 101 program.
“We are going to miss a couple of DIRT races this weekend, but we will be in North Carolina with the Race 101 program. I am pretty excited about getting to run some laps on the pavement”, says Billings.
